GERMANS AID RIFFS
''CLAIM OF FRENCH
10 LACK PLANES
PARIS. July 17 (A. P.i Total
French casualties so far In the Moroc
can war with Abd-ElKrlm's Rlfflans
are given by the Petit Journal In a
Fez dispatch as 4148. Ot these, 707
were killed, 2775. wounded and 6GG
missing.
. The Petit Journal's Fez correspond
ent says Abd-El-Krim has so reduced
the French effectives In Morocco that
they are daily becoming less efficleut.
French troops, because their numbers
are Insufficient, ere compelled to be
in the fighting line constantly, with
no rest periods whatever. They are
carrying on under terrific beat and
the corresopndent insists it Is Im
perative they be relieved soon. He
demands additional aviation units and
says the present French bombing
planes in Morocco have a radius of
only 18 miles over the enemy lines
and that pursuit planes are badly
needed.
The correspondent declares that
German officers are fighting with
Abd-EI-Krlm. One, he says, is named
Von Dietrich, a former member of
General Von Hlndenburg's staff.
He advocates- the bombardment of
AdJIr. AbdEl-Krlm's headquarters, by
the Spanish fleet or by French air
planes, and declares it is necessary
for the French to use native methods
of ' warfare against the Rlfflans
meaning the destruction of property
and confiscation of harvests, the pen
alizing of tribes who do not "assist the
French and the taking of hostages
from tribes whose fidelity wavers.
He says Abd-EI-Krlm took 200 host
ages from the Bent Zeroual clan, shot
half of them nnd Inflicted n fine of
2,000,000 francs on the tribe In addi
tion to confiscating quantities of its
goods.
t The writer says Marshal Lyautey,
French active commander In Morocco,
hat "seen the necessity of this pro
cedure" and that he Is organizing a
force to put it Into practice.
