DAYTON. JulV 16. (A. P.) The
iHsues In the Scopes case are profound
and Judge Raulston refuHes to havo
ihiH attention drawn from thorn when
he acta as usher for the spectators, he
has nnnounced.
Twk'e during1 the sultry afternoon
yesterday voices arose from the crowd
appealing to the judge for chairs. As
the jury was entering the box for the
first time since Us selection, the voice
of a newspaper reported rang out:
"Can we have chairs, Judge "
"Gentlemen, I do not believe the
Kiole court room should expect the
judge to look after chairs. Let the
sheriff do that, appeal to the sher
iff," the judge replied.
A second similar request later In the
afternoon brought the declaration that
"It is foolish to expect the judge of the
court to provide chairs for everybody,
to leave the bench and have everybody
move back. Appeal to the sheriff and
executive officers because I have as
many responsibilities ns I tan get away
with without having to attend to those
details."
PRANCE EXPLAINS
OPPOSITION TO U. S.
L
PARIS, July 16. (A. P.) V mis
understanding seems to have arisen
here concerning the attitude of the
United States government toward a
Chinese conference. It has been un
derstood in Paris that President Cool
idge had in mind a conference dis
tinct from that provided for In the
nine power treaty.
It is assumed here the latter confer
ence will be assembled uutortiatically
in consequence of the recent perfec
tion .of thn treaty by the nine sig
natory powers and the French raise
no question whatever regarding that
conference.
Paris dispatches yesterday said
French officiul circles think this not
a propitious time for negotiations
seeking revision of foreign extra-territorial
privileges in China.
WASHINGTON, July 16. (A. P.)
An official communication giving a
clear and complete statement of the
Washington government's attitude re
garding China has been cabled to
Paris for the Information of French
foreign office officials.
Disclosure of the contents of the
communication was withheld. It con
tains Information, however, which
Washington officials hope will remove
any possible misunderstanding be
tween the American and French gov
ernments. -
