as to whether Iho condition Is really
heatstroke or sunstroko and not col
lapse from some underlying illness or
ordinary fainting, for real heatstroke
or sunstroke presents a very different
picture from these other conditions,
which nro commonly misinterpreted
as "heat exhaustion" or "being over
come by the hent." In heatstroke or
sunstroke tho victim's face Is flushed
or cyanosed (purple or bluo appear-
ance), his breathing is deep, labored
nnd probably noisy (stertorous or
snoring or puffing), his skin feels hot
anil dry. his pulse is full and bounding
Istrongor than normal), nnd If his
body temperature is taken It is gener
ally elevated many degrees above nor
mal. In collapso, surgical or accidental
shock, or fainting, the picture is just
the opposite in every respect: Pale
I'lice, shallow n,uiet brenthlng, skin
col" and clammy to the touch (cold
swont), pulse so feeble and small that
n novice can scarcely feel It nt all,
and body temperature a degree of two
below the normal. When tills latter
picture is seen, the heat or smi has
littlo to do with tho condition nnd the
care of the victim is the caro which
should be given In ordinary collapse,
shock or fainting.
Tlie more perfect and iahnmcred

main nnd practically the oiajy function
