i NEW YORK, June 24. (A. V.)
Mlsa Mnry MacSwiney, retuAiing to
New York from a lecture tour, took
occasion today to deny certain state
ments that were credited to her In the
press. She was particularly insistent
that she had not threatened a hunger
strike If arrested in thin country and
that she did not say she had come
into the country without a passport.
"I have been quoted," said Miss
MacSwiney, "as having said I would
start a hunger strike if I was arrested
.by United States authorities on sus
picion of having entered this country
irregularly. I desire to correct that
statement. Such an attitude on my
part would not only be unjustifiable
but Immoral.
"A hunger strike is a very serious
matter and one not to be lightly or
rashly undertaken. I shall always
hunger strike against the British
claim to authority in Ireland if ar
rested by them or any of their ser
vants. The position is quite other
wise here. The United States govern
ment Is the lawful government of this
country and while I am a visitor hero
1 am bound to obey the laws and
regulations. 1 desire to stress this
point because 1 believe the report of
my intention to hunger strike is just
British propaganda. As I have al
ready said, I shall neither hunger
strike, or 'go on tho run.' If your
authorities want mo they will have no
difficulty In finding me. I did not
give any reporter an account of any
alleged visit to the Immigration
authorities and I did not say to any
one that I camo without a passport.
I did not affirm or deny my posses
sion of a passport and as I am neither
lb fool nor an ignoramus it is equally
untrue to say thut I did not know a
passport was necessary. I made no
euch statement."

WASHINGTON, June 24. (A. P.)
The Anti-Saloon league and the As
soclation Against the Prohibition
Amendment, whoso goals are exactly
opposite, find themselves in paradox
ical agreomcnt on the shakeup In the
enforcement system ordered by Assis
tant Secretary Andrews of the treas
ury. Both organizations, however,
qualified .their endorsement of the
new order in statements last night,
Tho re-organization ordered by Mr.
Andrews, to bo effective August 1
abolishing stato lines in favor of di
visions according to federal judicial
districts and decentralization author
ity was declared by the association as
"a move obviously in tho right direc
tion. 9
"If prohibition can be enforced.
the statement declared, "tnls man nnd
these methods will enforce It. We
are equally confident too. that if the
law cannot bo enforced which will be
the case, then General Andrews will
be just as straightforward In an
nounefng his failure as ho has been In
hfi efforts to bring about honest en
forcement."
The shakeup will do much to re
move "spoils politics," tho association
added, and It injects "common sense,
good faith and sound judgment into
the prohibition system.
Wayne B. Wheeler, general counsel
of the Antl-Snloon league declared
tho plan would doubtless eliminate
liquor better than "under the present
system, but we will, of course ask
congress to put all the prohibition
agents under civil service so that this
policy will be fixed by statute.
