George E. Goodwin, chlpf engineer
of the national parks service, who is
making a tour of the various national
-liarks, arrived here from Portland this
morning en route to Crater hike na
tional park to remain "there until Sat
urday to look over the details of the
hard surfacing of the Medford and
Klamath entrance roads of the park.
for which the Warreu Construction
company has the contract and is get
ting ready to start the fjork by about
July 1.
Mr. Goodwin was met at the depot
liv his old friend. Alex Spuoow, and
Mr. Semon, the resident engineer in
charge of the park road improvement
work. This noon Messrs. Goodwin and
Sunrrow banqueted at Dan's Lunch
and renewed old times while they
each got outside of a piece of pie and
glass of milk. ' . :
Many years ago. shortly after ti'ill
G. Steel discovered Crater lake and
started to put It on the' map nation
ally, the firm of Goodwin & Sparrow;
feeling very philanthropic, decided to
help in this work, the former by lay
ing out the roads, etc., and the latter
by serving first as road building super
visor and later as superintendent of
the park until a few years ago.
The Damon and Pythias spectacle of
these two old grn-hnired gentlemen
gathered this noon around the festal
board eating pie and drinking milk
was an inspiring one.
Chief Knglneer Goodwin said that
he would huve enough park funds to
complete hard surfacing of the Med
ford and Klamath roads as far as
Government camp this year, but not
as far as the lodge. The contractors,
he said. 'would build three miles a
month, and would start work on the
Medford entrance road first.
