WARMER WEATHER
NEEDED BY FRUIT,
SAYS CROP REPORT
PORTLAND Ore., June 18. The
woather has been generally favorable
for Mniall grain, except that hall did
imlue local damage' and there was
ftbmo Injury by frost in elevated dis
tricts, says the weekly Oregon crop
report IsHUed here today by the
weather bureau. Winter barley and
wheat are ripening slowly.
Most fruits need, warmer 'weather.
Raspberries . and cherries are in
market in small quantities. Straw
berries are nearly gone in some
places, but are still plentiful in
others. Ijiter fruits are sizing well.
The first cutting of alfalfa is in
the stack in the milder localities
and the second crop is starting
well, but needs warmer weather.
Eary potatoes' are in market in
increasing quantities, panting of late
potatoes continues. Some damage
was done by frost to potatoes and
gardens in elevated districts, and in
a few northeastern localities hail was
reported.
Gardens need warmer weather.
Hops are doing well. Flax is mak
ing good growth. . v .
U. S. PEAR CROP '
WILL BE SHORT
CHICAGO, Juno 18. (A- P.) Fruit
crops are short Apples and pears as
well as peaches, are expected to be in
lighter supply than last season.
The shortage of fruit is announced
today by the United Stated govern
ment bureau of agricultural economics
and Is stated to be the effect of a
severe winter or of spring freezes in'
some sections and dry weather in
others.
Prospect of fewer peaches thnn last
year is especially apparent. The es
timated production is slightly more
than 47,000,000 bushes; eleven per
cent less than in 1924.
Decided gains as compared witu last
seasoin are reported in the poach pro
duction of Missouri nnd California.
The California crop of lfi.000.000 bush
els may prove the largest since 1922.
