CHANTS PASS, June 1 It. The re

Push for u recovery of valuta from
black Hiind is of sufficient impor
tance to warrant an exposition of the

the plant and ita probable chnnces.
of success.
The auriferous snivels of south
western OrKon may be roughly di
vided Into two c hisses, the undent
and the modern. The ehnracterwiticH
t,r th two vary Kreatly in almost
every particular. The undent (travels
wen deposited at a time wnen wiu
cnutour of the country was entirely
different from what It Is today, and
the deposits are of very much great
er depth and area than those of the
modern (travels; their content is dif
ferent in kind, in quality and in
quantity.
The Waldo district and the 1, eland
district are two outstandltiK examples
of ancient travel deposits. Kecent
erosion making theso Ktavcl beds
Jiave the appearance of mountains or
very hlh hills. Their structure,
however Is unmistakable, and the
presence of the cretaceous conglome
rate, together w 1 1 h the location,
stamps them ns belonglnK to an age
antedating that of any other known
aufierouH deposit In the district.
Their extent Is great, tutalllug many
millions, and possibly billions of cu
bic yards. It has been estimated nt
the lOsterly mine alone that by hy
draiilicinK with a supply of water
Hiifflcicnt for the domestic use of the
entire city of Chicago, It would take
200 years of net mil work to exhaust
the supply. The old channel at Clii
llce Is even larger, the filacer de
posits at I.elnnd are, many times
greater anil the numerous other
Homewhat smaller ancient gravel de
posits bring the total mineable quan
tity to almost Incalculable figures.
Theso ancient Brave Is are easily
mined except for the difficulty of
getting water to their level and are
uniformly rich In the noble metals.
At the Ksteiiy mine, for Instance,
in one cleanup 84 ounces of metalic
platinum wore marketed, the metal
being of BUTflclcnt purity to bring
$1 17 an ounce in the market. In
tho Anderson mine on Boulder creek
there have been unusual recoveries
of Iridium, some of tho concentrates
having sold for as high as $-12 an
ounce, duo to their iridium content.
Bo far the methods used fn mining
tho ancient pincers have been the
simplest possible, hydraullcing with
the ordinary riffles, designed only
for tho recovery of coarsh gold being
practically tho only one. Tho beat
estimate of tho percentage of re
covery has been between 30 and 36
per cent of the values, all of the
fines being lost nnd practically all of
tho nobler metnls, Kven by this
method the work linn paid a hnnd
name profit, and 'the result of any
treatment which will recover nil or
any part of the present wustcngo will
bo to make, what has been only rea
sonably profitable most unusually
attractive In a business way. Of nil
tho processes which luivo been
brought to tho attention of mining
men in this vicinity during the pant
ten or a dozen yours, tho most prnc
tlcnl has been the present establish
ment on tho banks of the Itoguo
near Ino city of (hunts Pass, being
tho. plant erected by the Metals Ex
traction & Ueflnlng company of Og
den, rtah. They have erected nnd
equipped a practical nnd economlcnl
plant with a present capacity of 50
tons of material per day, and the
plant is so built that It may be
doubted In its capacity when tho re
quirements will demand. If this plant
shall, as it promises, solve tho prob
lem of (he recovery of the fine gold
and the rare metals from tho black
winds, it will revolutionize the entire
mining Industry of southwestern Ore
In conclusion there Is probably no
opportunity in the whole American
business world today which promises
so sure and profitable, returns for
the Investment of money and effort
ns does the black sand proposition
of southwestern Oregon, and this Is
predicted very largely on the Instal
lation of the recovery plant at pres
ent established here.
