GENERAL WHIIE-
CUE SPEAKER AT
ELKS' FLAG DAYi
t
The leading feature of the annual
Flag day observance of the Medford
lodge of Elks, held in the city park
Sundny afternoon beneath the trees,
was the address by Urigadier General
George A. White, commanding of
ficer of tho Oregon National" Guard
before a lurge assemblage . of citi
zens, many soldiers from .Camp Jack
son, and a large delegation of Elks.
Patriotic and other selections were
played by the lSlith regiment band
from Camp Jackson and the D. O. K.
K. band of this city.
General White's eloquent address
pertained to a history of the L. S.
flag from its birth. In the absence
of Floyd Hart, exalted ruler of the
Elks lodge, Carl Y. Tengwald, es
teemed lending knight, presided at
the exercises. . j
The Elks lodge ritualistic exercises
on such occasions were observed, and
a history of the flag was given by
Uon Newbury. The- exercises con
cluded with the singing of America
by the- entire assemblage.
The always beautiful decorative fea
ture on Elks flag day, furnished and
made by N. C. Bennett, was on hand
as. usual, a handsome' large liberty
bell tot 'flowers.-. - 'j'
TODAY EXPLAINED
The two big hnlos seen around the
sun today until shortly after noon had
the people of the city and. valley
quietly excited and caused many com
ments. The superstitious predicted
everything dreadful, including the
world possibly coining to nn end or
uu earthquake or big storm.
the explanation of the hnlos. how
ever, as given out by the local weather
office, is that they were caused by the
gathering of much moisture In the
clouds, upon which the sun shone with
rainbow effect and possibly might
preclude a coming change in atmo
spheric conditions.
The general explanation as to the
meaning, especially by thoso residents
who formerly lived in the oast.1 was
that tho halos'meant a coming storm.
What seemingly threw evoryone "up
!n the air"' was that the hnlos were
no large,' and vjith such: n wide space
between them, l it is seldom that even
one small halo 'is seen In the daytime
and a rare occurrence for two of them
to be seen nt the anme time.
1 The weather prediction, however, is
for fair weather and a moderate tem
perature tomorrow.
