BY EXPLOSION !
IN COAL ill
STUI1GIS, Ky., June 8. (A. P.)
Twelve or thirteen 'men were en
tombed by a gas explosion in a West
Kentucky Coal company's mine No.
9 here today, B. E. Jenkins, vice
president of the company said. Seven
were negroes. An accurate check,
he said, was impossible because some
of the men who had buen working in
the mine, had joined tho rescue crew
seeking to effect an entrance into
tho wrecked section.
The explosion damaged only en
tries No. 1 and No. 2, Jenkins said.
The fate of the men working beyond
the blast are could not be deter
mined. Asked if a recheck by W. L. "Wil
liams, purchasing agent for the com
pany that only six men were en
tombed, had been verified, Jenkins
said that mine officials believed at
least twelve men were underground.
"The explosion was purely local,"
he Enid, "it was a gas blast und
affected only two entries."
About 130 men were underground
when the blast occurred, he said.
The estimate of 130 men agreed with
a recheck made by Williams.
The men undergrqund were thought
to have been 400 feet or more from
the section most severely damaged
by the blast.
