An unusual and Interesting, fact
wus notod In tho courtesy resolutions
recently published by tho exeeutivo
oammlttoo of tho local I. O. O. R and
Itebekah lodges and that was that
there was a surplus rather than a defi
cit when all ubltKatlons of the recent
convention had been met. The ut
tnndunco was named as 1500 outside
of tho itnftue River valley and the cou
coiiHUs of opinion neemed to be that
this was tho inost successful session
ever held and the cooperation of all or-
KunizatlotiH and citizenry s"oms to bo !
responsible for that situation. '
Tho ceremonial held May L'tl, In Ash
land by tho Daughters of the Nile was
a most successful mectlnK, with eigh
teen candidates to be initiated, one of
whom was from ItoHchui'K. Masonic
hall was tastefully decorated In flow
ers, with tho colors of the organization
shown In tho deeorativo scheme, one
hundred and fifty covers were laid at
tho banquet, nerved at the Hotel Ash
land. The dining room also wan har
monious. In the green, white and yel
low, and the banquet Itself was nil that
could ho desired; a triumph of culin
ary skill and most satisfactory to the
appreciative guests. After the repast
adjournment was made to the Armory,
where Ruests danced to the strains of
Dicky's orchestra. Delicious punch was
erved during tho evening. Appre
ciative praise was given the committee,
headed by Mrs. l.tilu France, who ar
ranged tho decorations, and the stunt
committeo also deserves much credit
for its successful part In the after
noon's proceedings.
Mr. Florence Stmlcbaker, n former
resident of Ashland is spending some
tlmo tho guest of her many friends.
Mrs. Htudebaker expects to leave thv
Seattle next week, later visiting a
daughter In Chicago. From Chicago
Kho will go on to Creenshoro, North
Carollno. Monday. Mrs. Studelmker
was a guest nt the home of Mrs. I ahum
tfehwoin of Church street.
The quarterly banquet of the Mar
tha Gillette chapter of the Westmin
ster Guild occurred last night at tho
Preebyterlan church, with a large per
ceiilngf of the membership present, de
spite tho inclemency of the weather,
which prevented the original plan
(that of a picnic in the park) being
carried out. The banquet was a cover
ed dish affair, and the table was load
ed with delicious dishes to which all
did Justice. Tho free will offering more
than covered the quota of the Guild
fur thlfi quarter, leaving a substantial
sum In tho treasury. This pleasant
gathering marked the olnso of the
year' work, the last program having
been given Sueiday evening, finishing
the review of one of the splendid
hooks studied during the year.
Compimitlve figures received re
cently from the Oregon state library
show that the library system of
Jackson county with tho central at
Med ford still stands next to the
Multnomah county system with con-f
tral at Portland, In amount of work
(lone. The total number of books j
circulated In Jackson county In 1!24,
was 106.701, about ii.000 more thanl
the previous record made. The num
ber of deposit stations In homes and
schools have Increased. The largest f
number of books read In any branch
library were issued from Jackson
ville, with Mrs. K. O. Merrifleld In i
charge. Rogue River public li
brary. In charge of Mrs. Oscar Shep
herd occupied u very close second
place.
The comparative percentages for
1024 Indicated that the largest
amount of reference work with
the residents of tho community and
schools was done at Hutto Falls, In
charge of Miss Hazel Taylor, with
Kagie Point second, In charge of
Mrs. J. F. Brown. The greatest
proportion of children's hookB were
read at Central Point, Mrs. It. H.
Moore, librarian, with Jacksonville;
second.
The Gold Hill library, under Mrs.
A. 10. Kellngg. accomplished for 1 i 24
an Improvement In tho character
nf the work done and Increased the
amount of work done 200 per cent1
over 1923. Other branches are lo
cated at Talent and Hams Valley
wit h a new one added tit Phoenix
this year.
The growth In the book collection
and the amount of work to ho done,
has mado It necessary to take over
tho nudltorlum In tho central li
brary at Med ftm for library pur
poses and It will therefore be Im
possible for the library to accommo
date. In future any largo public
meetings. Small groups will con
tinue to ur.o tho small club room.
Gloria Swanson Scores
In"Mme.Sans-Gene"
Tempestuous "Madame Sans Gene,"
who shocked tho court of Napoleon,
vamped the emperor's army, and loved
boa hem with "s,e grand passion," lives
in the delightful vivacity and piquant
individuality of Gloria Hwanson, on tho
screen at the Hunts Craterlan. Adapted
from the famous play by Victorlen Sar-
dou and F.uillu Moreno, the film loses
none of tho beautiful romance of the
historical period that surrounded Its
enactment. It was filmed In, tho ac
tual locations at Versailles and Fon
talnbtcau In France.
A review of the play would not bo
complete without an appreciation of
the sincere efforts of tho producers to
maintain tho truo spirit of' tho play
through adapting tho actual scenes In
Franco to their purposes. Tho educa
tional elemonts In such a play are of
merit. Permission to uso tho place
and grounds at Versailles was granted
by the French government.
Tho cast which surrounds Gloria
Swanson Is entirely French. Charles
do Roche, plays tho lead. The char
acterisation of Napoleon by Kmllo
Drain is a fine piece of acting. Made
lino (luitly, plays the role of Iji ltous
otte, tho old laundress, adds a comedy
note that Is equalled only by our own
Chttiy Fitzgerald. v
