QUACK JAILED, HER
PROBE RESULTS OF
RIGID ECONOMY
ON FUTURE ARMY
WASHINGTON, May 28. (By As
sociated Press.) The army general
staff has been directed to make .a
study -of the effect upon the military
establishment of further progressive
reduction in military appropriations
should that result in the govern
ment's economy program.
The Inquiry is underutood to have
been ordered on the basis of a White
House inquiry of tho war depart
ment. Whether other departments
have received similar inquiries has
not been disclosed.
At tho navy department Secretary
Wilbur would not say whether naval
budget officers were engaged in a
study similar to that of the war de
partment. Despite refusal of the war depart
ment officials to discuss the question
the unusual secrecy which surrounds
the study being made there, it is indi
cated that the progressive reduction
of appropriations under consideration
would become effective for tho fiscal
year 1927 to run for several years
thereafter before reaching the cumu
lative total reduction contemplated in
the White House suggestion.
Tho general budget business meet
ing of the government will be held
June 22.
No definite Information as' to the
contemplated aggregate cut in war
department appropriations is avail
able. There are indications, however,
that it would run to a figure of be
tween $115,000,000 and $30,000,000 t8
be lopped off the military appropria
tions included in the total of $339.
797,971 appropriated for all war de
partment activities for the 1926 fiscal
year.
The military portion of the budget
for the year is $255,3S8.074, which
represented a reduction of approxi
mately $4,000,000 from the similar
appropriations for the preceding
year.
Despite rigid secrecy requirements
imposed on army officials, it is said
to be a matter of grave concern be
cause of the effect a reduction of
$25,000,000 to $30,000,000 would have
on the whole scheme of national defense.
Some officials go so far as to con
tend that such a cut In appropriations
would compel tho virtual abandon
ment- of -the organized roservo ele
ment of the new army and sharp cur
tailment of federal usslstanco to the
National Guard.
HUNTINGTON PARK. Cal., May
28.; Because one of her patients

Is In jail -today awaiting trial on a

out a license. At her hearing In
justice court yesterday., witnesses told
how they had paid various sums to
the "doctor" for removing "live
animals" discovered In their stom
achs through X-ray examination. All
wont merrily, tho testimony showed,
until Manuel Rodriguez, a former
fisherman, complained to authorities
that the "livfe pnimnl" he hod paid
Dr. Ybarra $40 to remove from his
stomach was Just an ordinary sea
crab and he was sure some sleight
of hand must have been involved in
"removing" it from his anatomy. It
was then the ''doctor'!! was arrested;
