MAN 10 CLAIMS
HE MADE LILLIAN
NEW YORK, May 21. Charles H.
Duell, former motion plctuie producer,
who made Lt 1 11 fin Gish rich, according
to his counsel, was on hla way to
Miami, Fla., today to attempt to make
enough money in real estate to fight
a federal indictment for perjury. There
are reports that he has a 7500 a year
job.
The man whoso management netted
Miss Glsh a fortune of 1250,000 in
three years, was declared penniless by
hla counsel, Colonel William Hay
ward, in arguing for low hall. Friends
In the American Legion provided a
bond of $1,000.
During the war Duell was a lieu
tenant on a destroyer in the subma
rine zone.
"For three years Duell made Miss
Glsh and others rich," Mr. Haywnrd
told Judge A. N. Hand. "Then they
fought him. The resultant litigation
wiped out his fortune."
Tho perjury indictment grew out of
an unsuccessful suit by Duell to com
pel Miss Gish to live up to a contract
to make pictures for him exclusively.
During the trial, it is charged he made
false statements. Among other things,
he testified that he had been "unoffi
cially" engaged to Miss Gish and that
the engagement was to become "offi
cial" when he was divorced.
