looking to the scrapping of upwards
of 400 government ships probably will
be recommended to the shipping
board shortly by its sub-committee on
scrapping.
Such a step would pave the way for
tho sale or junking of a largo block
of vessels to Henry Ford or other bid
ders under open competitive terms.
The sub committee, consisting of
Chairman O'Connor and Commis
sioner I Mil miner and Jlenson is under
stood to favor such n policy and while
It will encounter opposition In the
board there are indications that it may
command a majority.
Mr. O'Connor declined today to am
plify his statement of yesterday ex
pressing the belief that Mr. Ford
would make an offer to buy ships
both for operation and for -Hcrnpping.

PORTLAND, Ore., May 21. The
temporary Injunction obtained by
ederick M. JieNeffe, local attorney,
enjoining tho stato highway com
mission from entering into n con

Presiding Circuit Judge Morrow.
Judge Morrow declared at tho con
clusion of arguments that in his
opinion the highway commission's

tho validity of tho contract through
the courts. At the request of Jay

Judge agreed that upon the filing of

Davis, was retaken a low hours later
in the ra 1 1 road yards after he h ad
mounted nn engine on the track.

to go when holpeis hurriedly climbed
up beside him und shut off the
engine.
Davis, after being chased off the
engine took refuge in a box car. The
police were called and he defied them
with a knife. MJe was taken through
a trick of one of the officers who ap
proached him from the rear.
Davis fired the bedding in his cell'
early Monday morning and then
culled for help. The prisoners in the
adjoining cell threw water on the fire
through the bars and succeeded in
putting out the fire.
Other prisoners escaping were
I'addy Ryan, being held for the
grand jury on a chargo of stealing
a calf, and W. J. Nehrlng, serving. out
a four months sentence on a bad
check charge. This is Nehrlng's sec
mid escape while serving this sen
tence. The first time he came back
to town when his brother was ill and
tho officer took him.
