ORKOSTT, Wis., May 2'. (A. F.)
A lst mesace from Fort Howard
In 18:10 located on tho present site
of the city of Green Bay, has been
found here by Carleton Steulis.
Mr. Steubs turned up a peculiar
appearing stone while spading his
gniden. Apparently two small. pieces
of granite had been sealed together
with clay. Twisting the tyo, the
clay fell away and a bit of paper
was exposed,- bearing this message:
'Fort Howard, February, 1830. In
dian ammunition running low.
'(Signed) J. D. commnnder."
From the size of the two bits of
grnnite, it Is believed hat the mes
sage was placed where found and
given to nn Indian runner to carry
to the Fort Howard commander's
superior officer and that tho runner
was either killed or captured at the
present location of Oshkosh and
rather than -have his captors receive
the message cast it from him and it
remained untouched until Mr. Steubs
picked It up.
