jtest3R)HE popularity of, the ono-story
Ds house continues unabated in all
parts of the country. The artis
tic possibilities in houses of this
character have not always been
realized, but in the last few years more and
more charming bungalows are being built.
Take the house illustrated. The architect
has produced a beautiful and interesting ex
terior without piling on a lot of meaningless
ornament. Its architectural merit lies in its
mass and proportion, the pleasing lines and
surfaces of the hipped antj tiled roof, and the
attention that has been given to the details.
Note especially the beautiful entrance shown
in the detail drawing. .
The scheme of brick, work could best be
carried out with a rough'-textured face brick,
laid in a wide mortar joint This would bring
out' the artistic pattern work in the walls,
steps and piers.
While this house would suit , almost any
. lot, the builder should well consider its im
mediate surroundings. Its neighboring
houses should be built along low lines and
not too close. Shrubs and flowers and vines
Design a J lor American Face Brick Association
around its base would set it off to best ad
vantage. A single tree at the front of the
lawn to cast its shadows across ,the red-tiled
roof would add a touch of protecting camara
derie, quite indefinable. - -
The interior of the house is much more
spacious than one would think possible. The
six rooms are all adequate in size and their
arrangement is exceptionally convenient and
economical. There is not an inch of waste
space.
The three bedrooms at the. back of the
house, each with a large closet, communicate
with the bath by a common hall in which are
found convenient closets for linen and wraps.
The kitchen, just back of the dining room
and convenient to the front door, is compact
and well appointed. It has an enclosed porch
from which the stairs to the basement de
scend. A line sleeping porch could easily be
added at the side of one of the corner bed
rooms. . ,
The basement has a laundry, heater, coal
bins and a vegetable cellar, besides general
.storage spaces.

hih school to allow the use of both the old and the new buildings, there being but ten rooms
planned in new, and that to cost $185,000. Later we should bave the privilege of completing
the nev school at an added cost of probably a hundred thousand dollars. (
But why spend $185,000 for a ten-room unit when men, expert in the solution of school
problems, maintain that an entire high school can be built and equipped f"r Hint sum! With
a complete high school, the present high schofll building could be released to relieve the
over-crowded grade conditions.
Granting that the members of the honorable school board arc giants in their own lines
of endeavor, would it not be better business on our part and theirs to recognize the superior
ability of a board of experts who have for years specialized in school administration and its
attendant problems? - "
Let the shoemaker have his awl, the dentist his drill, the carpenter his saw. This is an
age of specialism. Why not entrust our school problems to those trained for that work?
" REMEMBER, TAXPAYERS, a vote for P. & E. site means $185,000 ior a half -portion
high school, not a complete building, properly equipped, which is what wc need and which
it is possible to build for that sum. ' . .
