CHICACiO, May 13. (Ily the Asso
ciated Press.) Pictures of the home
life, struggles and vanities of the men
aiid women who, 50(10 years ago, built
a might)' empire in the now barren
sands of Mesopotamia, wore contained
in a report to Stanley Field today
from Professor S. II. hangdon of the
Field museum-Oxford university expe
dition excavating at Klsh.
""Women's boudoir Jewels, children's
toys, art works and contents of the
palace of the first kings of Klsh. found
by the expedition, furnished the ma
terial for Professor Langdon's Inter
pretations. "The Sutnerlan palace, greatest and
oldest residence of Ancient times, has
been completely excavated," said the
report.
"A remarkable discovery was made
on the western side of the pulace,
where a great hall. 7U feet long by 110
feet wide was found. In its center
stood a row of columns five feet In
diameter and a great water basin. It
is obvious that this huge hail was the
imposing entrance of the royal throne
room and that the great basin was
for ablutions for those Invited to enter
into the inner palace. The entire
palaco was fortified by two thick
walls, between which ran a moat pro
vided wUh draw bridges."

I'AUIH. May . 13. (Hy Associated

office and the American embassy
ovor tho roported prospect of the
United States government pending a
note to France about her debts to
America hns been quieted by news
from Washington of the state depart
ment's official dental that hucIi u nolo

However, tho conviction exists here
that Finance Minister Calltuux in
tends himself to raise the question
later In the year and it 1h believed
that he lias already discussed the
mutter with Onrrnrd B. Winston, as
sistant secretary of the United States
trensury. during the hitter's recent
visit here.
M. Cullluux Is described as having
reached (he determination to tako jp
the question with the United Hta.es
government for two reasons, first to
tranqulllxo the French state of mind,
and second because of the necessity
to advance French credit In New York
and London by arriving at un ar
rangement of both the, Amerlcun

with the aid of the L H. navy plans.
i plans to make reconnoi.ssancc flights
over other unknown regions which the
eye of man has never yet beheld.
I The other unexplored areas where
flights with the navy's nnuhi!;ian
planes are planned Include the central
part of Kllsmere Island and (irant
Kind, the central part of the great
' Greenland ice cap. the entire interior
of linffln Island, and the northern
part of Jabradoi
Why Planet Are radical
"I believe that the practical way of
erasing these unknown areas on the
maps of today Is by the use of air-
planes and particularly the new type I
of plane known as the amphibian i
which Is capable of landing wifely on
water, ice or land." Commander Mac
Millan said.
"To carry out this work success
fully, plan to establish a base at
Ktah, about 700ft miles from the North
Pole, which a good strong ship can
reach by August 1. It is my purpose
to leave A Vise-asset, Maine, about June
27, to proceed along the Nova Scotia
coast to Sydney, there to take on our
coal supply fo rthe season, and to con
tinue up through the Gulf of Kt. Uw
rence, to the I-abrador coast, and from
about 55 degrees north latitude cross
10 the Danish town of Jullunchaab,
South Greenland.
Fa mm of tho Norsemen
"With .lulianehaab as a base we
shall study the remains of the old
Norse settlements established in
southern Greenland some 1500 years
ago. Tho best authority on Green
land today states there are there about
100 farms of the early Norsemen, also
stone churches, and from this point
the Norsemen sailed away for the dis
covery of America. After investigat
ing and studying these ruins, especiall
the type of house built by the Norse
men, we Hhall proceed north to the
town of Godthanh.
"Back of thi stown there are about
ninety farms and some twenty-four
stone churches. The special reason
for visiting and studying these ruins
is to prove or disprove a similarity be
tween the houses built there by the
Norsemen and those that are found In
Labrador, reported by the Eskimos to
be built by a strange people who came
In fro mthe sea In open boats without
masts and without sails. I believe
that we ought to find In labrador the
first authentic proofs of thes'e Norse
men who came to America some 300
years before the time of Columbus.
PbuicH Will Carry Food
"From Godthaah we shall proceed
up the coast to Ktah, this to be a base
for the exploration work to be donfc by
the amphibian planes. From Ktah
011 and supplies enn be relayed o
Cape Thomas Hubbard, the most
northern point of Axel Helberg Land
at the edge of the Polar sea. The dis
tance Is, roughly, 2 50 miles. From
Cape Hubbard to the center of the
great unknown area is, roughly. 600
miles, which will mnke a total of 1200
miles to ho covered by the planes. It
is hoped by fastening extra fuel tanks
on the planes, to cover this distance in
a' continuous flight. If ice conditions
are favorable, other attempts may be
made north and south of this dlroct
line, thus eliminating thousands of
square miles of unknown area from the
maps of the world of today.
"Food will be taken in the plnnes
for several days of exploratlonvof any
lands that may be found In this area.
"Following our return to tho ship
at Hlub. other trips will be attempted
north to the center of fttlsmcre Island
und Grant ljnd to Cape Columbia nt
tho edge of the Polar sen, where Per
ry's record Is to be found, stating that
he reached the North Polo on April 6.

Flight, of flKO Miles
'The great Greenland ice enp, 500,
000 square mites of urea 74 is sup
posed to reach a height of aboutlO,
ono feet. ' No one has ever visited that
part of tho Ice cap between 76 degrees
and SO degrees north latitude, tho cen
ter of which is, roughly. 340 miles
from Kath. This will mean a cohtln
nous flight of 6So' miles, which can be
accomplished In about five hours. The
condition of tho Greenland Ice cap Is
such, however, that our planes should
have no difficulty in making a landing
every few minutes. This work done In

SUPERSTITIONS

ZEROLENE
even if it does
COST LESS
STANDARD
Superstitions don't last long,' espe
cially when it costs money, to. believe
in them.
For example, the majority of Pacific Coast motorists have
long since stopped paying tribute to the superstition
that there is something mysteriously "better" about
"eastern" motor oils merely because they cost more
and are made in the East
Experience proves superiority of western lubricants
As a matter of fact, the most suitable crude petroleum
so far discovered for the manufacture of a motor lubri
cant is the naphthenic base crude which this company
obtains from Pacific Coast wells. And the most ad
vanced refining process is the patented high-vacuum
process used exclusively by this company in the man
ufacture of Zerolene lubricants.
Zerolene is first choice of western motorists .
' Zerolene lubricates more cars in the Pacific Coast
states than any other oil made. Six out of the' seven
trophies offered in the 1924 .Los Angeles-Camp Curry
(Yosemite) Economy Run were won by Zerolene-lubricated
cars. The "anti-western'' bogie simply doesn't
hold pp. Zerolene increases gasoline mileage, reduces
upkeep costs and lengthens engine life, in high priced
cars and motor trucks alike.
Zerolene will do the same thing for your car. Why
pay tribute to a superstition? Insist on Zerolene by
name. , .
Get the facts!
A series of independent and impartial reports showing
the experience of large users with Zerolene has been
collected in our booklet, "Why Pay Tribute to a Super
stition?" Ask any Standard Oil Company representative
or Zerolene dealer for a ;opy.
