tal to succeed, and large cupltnl can
only bo secured by tho coming to
the district of the experienced min
ing men from other fields. When
they come, n sthey nre now doing
they should be treated fairly nnd en
couraged in every way to becomo
interested In our development. They
expect nothing short of sucli a pol
icy, henco any othei. policy will fall
miserably. lOxporlcneed mining men
know wlmt they want and what they;
are entitled to nnd aro willing to
deal on tho basis of fairness, both
wltii themselves and .those with
whom they come In contact. They
know what fairness is, know It is
the only policy to pursue, and insist
on it from others. They do not be
long to the sucker class who leap
before they look, therefore, any deal
put up to them to receive their con
sideration must be on the level nnd
open to n thorough investigation. It

agent and talked with tho owner.

prospective buyer did not so consider

Southwestern Oregon must net
away from such tactics to succeed
in its development prograui. No
one but a sucker would blto on n
proposition like those cited, and
sucker money never yet developed
it section, nnd never will.
One who performs n nervlce Is
entitled to a fair compensation, but
ono who attempts holdups of this
kind should bo denounced by nil fair
minded mining men. Tho mlno nnd
prospect owner shuutd bo careful In
giving out options on ills property
to insure a fair deal to nil concerned,
nnd all mining men should discour
age, any attempt to thwart tho de
velopment of our vast mineral re
sources by unfair business methods.

on. California has realized, after!
many years of inactivity, that lis!

valuable In the state, and is doing!
all that it can to bring about a re-j
newed interest. Recent legislation, j
and activities of the various mining
groups, chief of which is the mining
department of the Sacramento cham
ber of commerce, have carried on
publicity campaigns and assist ed In
every way to help revive the mining
Industry.
On Saturday of tills week the
mining bureau will hold its regular
monthly meeting. A large atten
dance Is expected, and many Items
of interest will be taken up. Plans
for tho annual meeting, and a gen
eral discussion of many matters are

of value to you in more ways than

Percy Johnson was In Grants Pass
for several days this week. Ho has
taken over tho Gold Dyke Mine on
Saxe creek, and is planning on a

months, but has good possibilities.
H. V. Wilkens is now on Coyote
creek, and is planning on a resump
tion of operations there. This prop
erty has been idle for several months

It Costs Millions Each Year
To Maintain Our Highways
The Highway Commission finds 90 of the damage is caused hy 4 of the traffic. This 4
includes for-hire trucks and busses operating as common carriers for their private gain.
The last Legislature passed a law requiring these for-hire busses and trucks to pay a moderate
charge to. reimburse the State and Counties in part only for the damage these heavy busses and
trucks are doing to the highway. -Whether this law becomes effective May 28, 1325, rests with the
people.
Tie Motor Bus and Freight Truck Associations are circulating referendum petitions to hold up
tliis law until November, 1926. If the people sign these referendum petitions, the private car owners
and the general taxpayer will continue to pay the tremendous cost of maintaining these highways
without receiving substantial help or aid from these for-hire trucks and busses that are doing most
of the damage.
When you are asked to sign one of these petitions remember that it is a commercial bus or truck
company that is asking you to relieve them of paying for the great damage that they are doing to
our roads.
Refuse to sign these petitions and advfee your neighbors to do the same.
