night searchlights stabbed the tropical
' sky over the Island of Oahu, searching

is a tense feeling of suspense evident
everywhere among the defending black
forces as the impending Invasion of
.the island drew one day nearer.
Persistent rumors that the blue
j attacking forces have established an
j aircraft base on the island of Kauai
with which communication has been
cut off are evidently taken seriously
,by the defending black forces, which
kept the heavens illuminated through
out the night by searchlights in an
'effort to prevent bombing ; of the
island's defenses by a possible air
raid of the invaders. For the first
time in history a major-general com
manding a beleaguered garrison, last
night broadcast his precarious position
by radio to all America, when Major
General E. M. Lewis, commanding the
Hawaiian department, spoke over
broadcasting station KGU. General
Lewis told of his position and ex
plained details of the war game.

PENDLETON, Ore., April 24. A
fortunate lull in the wind early this
morning was a factor in preventing a
heavy loss by fire in the heart of the
city, according to Chief Ringold of the
local fire department. The roofs were
burned off three small business estab
lishments. The wind had been blow
ing continuously for 48 hours but
halted about 4 o'clock this morning.
