Co-operative. Poultry Marketing'.
To the Editor:
Eggs and Toultry .of high quality
can be produced in southern Oregon
as cheaply if not more so than in any
other section of the United States.
Our climates, our soils and the mode
rate cost ofland is mainly responsible
for this.
Local poultry products have been
Increasing phenomtnally during the
last few years. In 1922 the output
was. wide that of 1921 and the 1923
output nearly doubled that of 1922.
At present our production is greater
than the local demand to the extent
of approximately 400 cases weekly.
I nless we ship these eggs out in car
lots we are at the mercy of a high
(nearly prohibitive) express rate. Car
load shipments in a locality where the
total head of stock does not exceed
50,000. is possible only when the total
product is marketed through one

QUESTIONS AND AXSWEHS. .
Away to Florida. .
-My husband and I had planned to
spend a few months in Florida, but
after reading your talk on hookworm
disease, we have hesitated about going
there. Just what danger Would we
run in visiting Miami and stopping at
good hotels in that part of Florida?
Mrs. M. E. G.
Answer The real estate agents
would bother you more than the hook
worms, if I were your husband's
wife I wouldn't let any pesky little
hookworms spoil my fun. Keep your
shoes on when you go for a walk and
you'll run no risk at all. Such hook
worm pollution of the soil as there Is
in Florida is In the. backwoods sec
tions where the people are primitive
about the disposal of human excre
ment. No danger of getting hook
worm disease In or about Miami.
Calcium of Lime.
What quantity of calcium or lime
salt do you advise for use with table
salt to supply a lime deficiency in
ultrarefined dietaries Mrs. B. K. C.
Answer Mix the salt for use in the
salt cellars with calcium carbonate,
half and half, and use this mixture
on the table In place of straight salt.
A slmpled. perhaps better way to get
more lime (calcium) would be by eat
ing more cheese of any and all varie
ties, more peanuts as a substantial
food rather than .a mere relish, and
more cabbage.
During the last two years a sincere
effort has been made to establish such
an agency in Jackson county, namely
the Poultry Producers Co-operative
association of southern Oregon.
The Poultry Producers Co-operative
association has been of inestimable
value to the poultry industry here
and due to its strict co-operative pol
icy has been of as much benefit to
the non-members as to the members.
It has done much to stabilize prices
and to rescue the product from the
speculative bartering of dealers.
Since the supporters of any asso
ciation must pay their prorated cost
of operating such an institution, ob
viously they are "holding the um
brella for the outsider." The pure
co-operative principle is "treat all
alike and what is good for one will
benefit the other."
A few years ago a locality in the
vicinity of San Francisco. California
was practically valueless, owing to its
unproductive soils. The poultry in-,
dustry took root and grew and as a
result of co-operative marketing its
products are sold at a premium;
throughout the United States. Land
values have increased to one thous-!
and dollars per acre and beautiful;
home places are noticeably plentiful. I
Petalun.a. California is known today!
as the egg basket of the world.
Co-operative marketing will do the
same for us. .
A drive for membership has been
launched by the Poultry Producers
Co-operative association of Southern
Oregon and within a few days all non
members will have the opportunity to
align themselves with that body.
Copies of the marketing agreement
and by-laws of the association will be
mailed to you. If you fail to get
your copy, notify the office. Your
prompt action in signing up will
greatly facilitate the work of and be
greaily appreciated by the member
ship committee.
