der mystery Involving the theories of
bootleg ring revenge or domestic
trouble centers around the activity of
detectives seeking clues to the slayers
'of John Duffy, found in a roadside
snowdrift at Argo, 111., early this mor
ning and a woman, partly Identified
tas Mrs. Duffy, found last night In an
apartment Duffy shared with Mr. and
Mrs. Cecil C. Horton.
A search Is being made for Mr. and
Mrs. Cecil Horton, thought to have
left ten days ago on an automobile
trip to Detroit and since returned,
altho papers and letters in the depart
ment Indicate the dead woman may be

Police learned from letters that the
woman formerly lived in Louisville,
Ky where she was known as Miss
Exlcy and Miss Virginia James and at
some time had lived In Herkeley, Cal.
A letter from her mother, written
her on February 13 indicated that she
had left home suddenly and been mar
ried to a stranger of .whom the moth
er apparently had no knowledge.
. According to the Chicago Herald
and Examiner, Duffy's real name is
John Daugherty, wanted for four
murders in Philadelphia. The news
paper says he was an accomplice of
Horton until they quarreled because
of Jealousy. '

burg businessmen today rejected the
proposition of the. Roseburg Oil and
Gas company, an Incorporation form
ed largely of Portland men, that the
residents of this cltv take over nnd
complete a tent well being drilled east I
of Roseburg. The company now has
a drill In operation and has 6000 acres
of land under lease, and because of
the benefits which would be received
by Roseburg, wanted the residents of
the city to finance the drilling.
The business men after an investi
gation by a special committee found
that funds to complete the well could
not be secured at thiB time, and that
"any undertaking Insufficiently financ
ed must result only In failure."

TAX TO CONGRESS
WASHINGTON, Feb. 23. The
house voted today to open federal tax
returns to Inspection by nny special
congressional committee and by the
house ways and means committee and
by the senate finance committees. The
action was taken with the adoption of
an amendment to the pending revenue
bill. Republican Insurgents and
democrats joined 1n approval of the
move which was carried 158 to 100.
iAn amendment also was adopted
orienlng. the returns to the proper
officers of any state, regardless of
whether, that state imposes an income
tax, as the law now requires.
The amendment to open the returns
to all the states was offered by Repre
sentative Earkley, democrat, Ken
tucky, and adopted 120 to 119, on the
teller's vote. .
Representative . Moore, democrat,
Virginia, offered the amendment to
open the returns to congressional
committees. It was adopted after
modifications suggested by Represen
tative Boyce, democrat, Delaware.
