SURVEY OFGOLD
HILL SMELTER 10
START THIS WEEK
1 GOLD HILL, Feb. 21. (Special.)
The banquet Riven by the Gold Hill
Commercial club Tuesday evening at
their regular weekly meetings at the
dining room of the Gold Hill hotel
was a well attended social function
and considerable business was dis
posed of during the evening. Sixty
plates were laid for the members and
wives and invited guests. All the val
ley towns were represented at the
meeting. Kx-Mayor M. B. Johnson,
president of tho club presided as
chairman and tonstmaster. Tho main
topics discussed during the evening
were the immediate construction of
tho smelter at Gold Hill and the fur
ther development of tho Sylvanito
mine three miles out from Gold Hill,
which is owned and operated by th-j
Pittsbough-Oregon Mining company.
Percy N. Johnson, president of the
West Coast Finance Co. who was in
strumental In the development of the
smelter project at Gold Hill was the
principal speaker of tho evening,
opening and closing the discussion.
He dealt quite extensively on the
feasibility of the smelter project, the
mineral wealth of Jackson, Josephine
and adjoining counties in southwest
Oregon, tho favorable reports of tho
mining fraternity of tho state on tho
project, and reported that the actual
survey of the site and railroad siding
to tho site would commence this week.
The city of Gold Hill is furnishing the
site, consisting of three acres, In the
now "Water Park addition to tho city
and located on the river 1200 feet
above the Pacific highway bridge
across Itogue river on tho west bank.
Tho Bylvanlte mine is consolidated
with tho smelter project, nnd both are
owned by tho Pittsburg-Oregon' Min
ing company, of Pittsburgh.
"It is my opinion," said Mr. Lancas
ter, "that a 100 ton capacity smelter
nt Gold Hill will be kept going at full
capacity, and undoubtedly the busi
ness will warrant a larger installation
within a year. Ono of tho most seri
ous calamities to befall any commu
nity Is to have a amejter shut down.
I do not believe you folks need have
tho slightest worry on that score. A
smelter here will bo a big asset to all
of southwestern Oregon nnd properly
managed will prove a permanent and
substantial business."
It. C. Dlera, tho chief engineer of
the West Coast Finance Co. on con
struction was the next speaker - Ho
will have immediate charge of the
construction of the' smeltor at Gold
J 1111 and had so mo experience In this
region before the war looking up the
mineral wealth of southwest Oregon
In view of the erection of a smelter in
this district. In reporting the matter
to his peoplo at that time recommend
ed that tho smeller should be built at
tho city of lloguo Hiver, nine miles
below, hut slnco coming back in the
valley to further survey the region
recommended that Gold Hill would be
the most foaslblo site, duo principally
as a power site and its developed
mines, which 'consist principally as
large producer,' tho Sylvanito, Mil
lionaire, Gold Hldge, liraden, nnd nt
least a dozen other smaller mines all
within a radious of five miles from
Gold Hill. Mr. Dlera talked quite ex
tensively on tho ore of the district
which fullfll all the requirements as
smoking ores.
Among tho other speakers who dis
cussed the smelter and mining situa
tion in southwest Oregon were J K.
Johnson the oivil engineer of tho
West Coast Finance company who Is
hero to do tho surveying nnd plating
ot the grounds and railway siding of
tho smelter site; Geo. W. Soranson, of
Grants Pass, secretary of the South
western Oregon Mining burenu; Henry
M. -Lancaster, mining engln'eor of
Grants Pass, and B, lloberliug,
manager of tho Mllllonalro miuo. 1
Itov. W: Leo Gray and A. K.. Hra
shear of tho Itoguo Kiver delegation,
both made a splendid hit In dlscuMiing
tho church and community question
which should bo applied to the Gold
Hill district, nnd they especially In
vited tho Gold Hilllto anA the others
prnttont to visit onw of their church
nnd community nights and learn tho
ltoguo ltivor way which has acquired
an extenslvo reputation In tho north
end Of the county. ...
1 V. H. Vawtor of Medford, gave a
brief talk on local prldo nnd commu
nity boosting; and P. H. Hell, cashier
of tho Gold Hill bank and secretary
of tho club, who uover tires of boating

Drugs Excite
the Kidneys,
Drink Water
Take" Salts at First Sign of
";' . ' Bladder Irritation or
Backache
The American men nnd women must
guard constantly against kidney 'trouble
ccause we often eat too much rich foou.
Our blood is filled with acids which the
kidneys strive to filter out; they weaken
from overwork, become sluggish, the
eliminativc tissues clog and the result
is kidney trouble, bladder weakness and
a general decline 'in health.
When your kidneys feel like lumps
of lead; your back hurts or the urine
is cloudy, full of sediment, or you are
obliged to seek relief two or three times
during the night; if you suffer with sick
headache, or dizzy, nervous spells, acid
stomach,, or if you have rheumatism
when the weather is bad, begin drink
ing lots of good soft water and get from
your pharmacist about four ounces of
Jad Salts. Take a tablespoon ful in a
glass of water before breakfast for a
few days and your kidneys may then
act fine. !
This famous salts is made from the
acid of grapes and lemon juice, com
bined with lithia. and has been used for
Years to help flush and stimulate clogged
kidneys, to neutralize the acids1 in the
system so -they no longer arc a soucce
of irritation, thus often relieving blad
der disorders.
Jad Salts is inexpensive; can not in
jure, makes a delightful effervescent
lithia-water drink and belongs in every
home, because nobody can make a mis
take by having a good kidney -flushing
any time. By all means have your phy
sician examine your kidneys at least
twice a year.

Many ,.tlmcst no doubt, you have
seen the above headline in your news

friend suddenly stricken with dread
appendicitis. The newspapers,, how

afflicted person suffered frequent at

went to the hospital.
While heartburn i not always a
sign of an Inflamed appendix, it is
always a warning that something is
wrong, in many cases it results from
Indigestion, which is one of the pre
disposing- causes of appendicitis.

THE EXTRA DAY
When the present system of recording time was eBtab
Vshe1, . vvas fou?d necessary' to add one day to each
fourth calendar year. This is such a year... One extra
day to be added to the year's production will mean thou
sands of dollars added to this year's payrolls. " ..
All time is valuable and in a busy world, twenty-four
additional hours in a year can mean much. Don't waste
them. Take that extra day's earnings and bank it.. V";
