SUPPORT THE FARM CONFERENCE.
T UB MEDFORD Chamber of Commerce 1ms never undertaken a
more important work than the agricultural mirvcy of Jackson
county and the securing of more settlers in Southern Oregon.
The two projects are inseparably associated. Anxious as this
community, and every community in the state, is for more settlers, it
would be supremely foolish to get more settlers until there is some in
telligent idea of what to do with them, after they have arrived.
Such an idea can only be gained from air accurate understanding
of just what our local situation is. finch an understanding can only
begained, by a survey such as the Chamber (if Commerce, assisted by
the State Agricultural college, has decided to undertake.
The first step, therefore, is to make this survey a complete suc
cess. Toward this end two main factors are chiefly important. First
the proper leadership and second the proper public support.
Fortunately for Jackson county the leadership is here. The
public support must come, not from any one district, or from any one
interest, but from every district, from all interests, from the people
of Jackson county as a whole.
This means that every resident of the county should be ready to
take an uclivcpart in this conference and contribute his or her share
to the solution of a problem upon which our permanent prosperity in
Southern Oregon absolutely depends.
There is no short cut to prosperity. There are no methods, as yet
evolved, to overcome tho venerable laws of supply and demand. But
there are also few undesirable conditions, which can't 'be vastly im
proved, where there is knowledge, team play and willingness to work.
This survey should give the knowledge. Through close associa
tion between the business men, professional men, ranchers and farm
ers, necessitated by such a conference, a better understanding should
be inevitable, and with a better understanding, team play should fol-

Down In Birmingham, Ala., the

victims of that modern convenience,
the X-ray, come to the doctor with
a ready made diagnosis of "fallen

led to believe that it calls for an oper

crocheting whereby tho stomach is
stitched up, where according to an old
theory, it belongs. This operation
called gastropexy, is the most uncalled
for operation in all surgery. In Dr.

What Is Wroni; With Mining?
To tho Kditor: Mining and tho pro
duction of j?olrt will ulwuys be one of
Huuthorn Oregon's Industries. Where
over tho stories of fortune hunting,
and the remarkable finds of gold, are
related. Oregon comes in for Its full
share of romance. However, the ro
mance period has passed. Tho easy
finds have been picked up, and most
of the old puy-strealts worked to tho
vanishing point. Vet thero Is gold in
tho hills. Any prospector can lead
you to numerous pocket-traces, and
lodges, where tho gold is found in
places. And as long as tho gold Is
there some one is going to it.
Southern Oregon has gold and lots
of it. Tho wonderful placer produc
tion of tho last seventy years s but a
paltry sum compared to that still
within the keeping of the hills. The
luro of gold keeps calling, und men
nro going to seek, and continue to
find the yellow metal.
For the last twenty years efforts to
produce gold from ledge formations
have met with disaster, but not al
ways because of lean values in . tho
ledge, or because of tho pinching out
of tho values, altho these are frequent
causes. A most universal and positive
causo of fniluro is the lack of proper
development of tho voin system. Time,
and ngaln mills and surface equip
ment have been placed on gold pro
perties, here in southern Oregon, before-
any serious effort to block out
ore has been attempted.
Tho mill and its Installation gen
erally consumes all of the available
rush in tho treasury, nnd this creates
tho bad impression of having to raise
more money with which to dig for ore.
One of tho bad features of trying
to mill without a good ore reserve to
call upon is the fact that the mill eats

Qt'KSTIONS AND ANSWERS
Pallor After Two Drinks
"Why does a person turn a whitish
color after two or three drinks? They
do not feel the least bit Intoxicated, so
why the white look when the liquor is
standard brand? (Curious).
Answer. That deathly pallor? It
is to be expected when you take poi
son. Whooping Cough -I
have three children, 6 weeks, 17
months and 27 months old. My sis
ter's two children are down with
whooping cough. My mother goes
over and helps her at night. Does
whooping cough carry In clothing?
AVould I be exposing my children if I
took them home to visit my mother?
That is, If I do not take them near my
sister's home? (Mrs. F. D. J.)
Answor. If your mother herself
has had whooping cough, there would
be no danger involved in taking the
children to visit her. If she has not
had It, there would be some risk, for
she may be coming down with it.
There Is no reason to suppose that this
disease is carried by clothing or by a
third person who is not ill nor coming
down with whooping cough. Animals
do have the disease and may carry it
cats, dogs. . 1 ; -
That PHI for the Willies
Kindly give me the name of the pills
that you mention as tho first part of
your treatment for the "willies."
(C. E.)
Answer. That was a figurative pill
exorcise.
For tho Rubdown
Please print a good liquid that a
professional boxer in training can use
for a rubdown. (M. J. W.)
Answer. The only purpose of such
a thing Is to prevent excessive fric
tion, and anything that may bo agree
able to tho boxer or the rubber is all
right cacao butter, simple liniment
(any oily emulsion), camphor lini
ment (camphorated oil), rubbing or
bathing alcohol, witch hazel extract,
or fresh cold cream. It is the mas
sage, not the medicament, that helps
to prevent stiffness or lameness.
For Kouiul Shoulders
Please name a good corrective exer
cise for a child aged 10 with round
shoulders? Should we get a grace for
her? (V. H. S.)
Answer. Tho child should do tho
dachshund crawl six to 20 times
around tho room each night and mor
ning In pajamas. She siiould practice
erect posture. Every hour by the
up the ore faster than tho preliminary
t surface openings can furnish it. An
1 Idle mill waiting for an ore supply
strikes a death blow at profits. A
system of gouging the ledge usually
results, and men who should bo push
ing ahead the much needed develop
ment work are thrown into tho goug
ing stunt with the result that the sur
face showinir is soon denleted. and the
' mine wrecked for want of funds to
continue the search for ore. Such is
the history of most of the spasmodic
attempts to develop ledge mining in
this section.
By following a system of intensive
development work, looking forward to
blocking out large oro reserves, there
is no reason why southern Oregon
should not have a string of paying
mines, and also one or two of tho big
mines of the country.
All of the necessary features and
values nro here. In our vein systems,
to make a big mine, but these values
to become real and of assay value,
must bo blocked out on all sides by
proper underground workings, and
tho positive ore aggregated Into thou
sands of tons. This is the problem
facing those who would have this sec
tion develop into a real mining center,
and as gold is strong and persistent,
and ever present in our hills, this
problem of going after a large ton
nage, and deep development, will soon
get hold of those who aro lured by its
power, and the big thing in mining
will become a fact.
A string of paying mines will de
velop home markets for local produce.
Eliminate, tho freight rate problem,
and do more than anything else
towards the building up of tho valley.
