A Inrge custom smelter, mill and
refining plant is to be erected at 'Gold
Hill nt an early date according to tho
announcement of officials of "the
Pittsburgh-Oregon Mining; comTmny
of Pittsburgh, and the Wesf'Coast Fi
nance company of Portland. .': - ' '
Percy M. Johnson, president of the
West Coast Finance company, has
been gathering data and statistics dur
ing the past year In connection with
the ore supplies of Southern Oregon.
Ciold Hill was finally selected as the
most convenient and practical loca
tion for a custom smelter site and ar
rangements were being made to or
ganize an independent smelting com
pany with local capital when a consol
idation of the smelter project was
made with the Pittsburgh-Oregon
Mining company, owners of the Syl
vanlte mine at Gold Hill. Tt is un
derstood that in excess of $250,000
will be expended upon the erection of
a complete smelting -and refining
plant and for mine development. ,!
The town of Gold Hill has made a
tentative offer of an excellent smelter
site conveniently located on the banks
of the Rogue river: nnd easily accosel?
ble to both railroad nnd highway. i
A rousing mass meeting of mining
nnd business men was held Tuesday
evening at the chamber of commerce
of Gold Hill at which time V. W.
Brown, of Pittsburgh, representing
tho Pittsburgh-Oregon Mining com
pany and Mr. Johnson outlined the
plans for immedlnto action, which
was greeted with enthusiasm. A sub-.
stantial sum of over $2000. to apply
against the capital required, was
pledged at the meeting and more is
expected.
hat Southern Oregon Is duo for
the greatest boom In recent years is
the opinion of Mr. Johnson who has
boon most active In bringing a custom
smelter to Southern Oregon.
"Southern Oregon is generally cred
ited by the best authorities with hav
ing the greatest potential mineral
wealth of any section in tho United
States yt it stands todny tho least
developed of any great mining dis
trict," said Mr. Johnson In an Inter
view today.
I have been reliably informed that
no other minoral district in tho world
has such a great assortment of miner
als as oro found here. Two things
have retarded the development due
this section; tho lack of local facili
ties for treating baso ores and the
lack of appreciation of tho enormous
mineral wealth of Southern Oregon
by tho state in general, and, sad to
say, hy many business men and oth
ers right here in its midst.
"A custom smelter, mill nnd refin
ery to treat tho ores will bring more
real dollars to Southern Oregon than
all your fruit, timber, livestock and
farming combined and that s an
enormous sum. I have seen literally
millions of dollars of ore In tho stopes
and ore dumps of mines In this dis
trict. Many peoplo will ask why the
mine owners have not shipped their
ore to other smelters. Tho answer
lies with the railroad companies in
their high freight rates. No mine op
erator can pay from $6 to as high as
$&B per ton to ship oro to either Ta
coma or Selby smelter when the
values of his oro will probably not av
erage over $20 per ton.
"Heretofore it has boon unprofit
able for most miners to mine ore hav
ing a value of less than $50 per ton.
With a local smelter, they can make
a fair profit from $8."
Mr. Johnson further stated that a
complete and efficient corps of engi
neers will bo maintained by tho smelt
er Interests to assist local minors to
mlno and handle their ores. A fleet
of largo trucks will also be used in
hauling oro nnd concentrates, it is
claimed, while several miles of aerial
trams will be used to connect such
mines ns tho Sylvanlte, Millionaire,
Gold Ridge, Braden and others situ
atod within two or three miles of the
smelter.
Many mining claims have been filed
in tho vicinity of Gold Hill during the
past week since tho first news of the
proposed smelter, and. it is rumored
that several large mining doals are un
der way ns a further result. Old tim
ers are sharpening their picks and
drills preparatory to an early rush to
the hills in search of tho precious
metals. .
It is believed that tho Blue Ledge
and St. Albans mine Interests will con
tribute ore in large quantities to help
along the cause.
