search for valuable minerul wealth
the government Is sending a party of
expert geologists and topographic en
gineers on a midwinter expedition to
the tip of Alaska on the Arctic, to
survey some 30,000 square miles of
uncharted wilderness, rugged moun
tain chains and large stretches of
undulating treeless plains.
A few days ago the geological sur
vey told of the plans to send, at the
expense of the- navy department.

ber of this winter's expedition
The present party, in addition to
Dr. timlth and Mertic, will consist of
William T. Foron, geologist; Gerald
Fitzgerald and R. K. Kent, topo
graphic engineers and several assist
ants. It will enter the region from
the south, starting in midwinter
when some of the transportation prob
lems are least difficult. It will be
left on Its own resources for at least
six months, and tons of supplies will
have to be transported, mainly -by
dog-sled, for 400 miles, even before
reaching the reserve.

Hebrides, and especially the Islund of
Lewis, are bordering on starvation.
The Islanders depend mainly upon
the food derived from the crops they
raise themse-lves, but when the crops
fail serious hardships are entailed.
This year the trouble came through
the destruction of tho crops bv the
abnormally wet weather of tho sum
mer and autumn. So widespread nnd
acute Is the distress that nppeats have
been Ituiued in Scotland and elsewhere
for assistance.

SOUTH BEND, Ind., Feb. B. Early
In the fifty-first year of its life, Val
paraiso University, situated in Val
par also, one of northern Indiana's
beautiful cities. Is taking steps to cor
rect the misinformation sent out last
summer that It was about to be taken
over "by the Ku Klux Klan. A com
mittee; composed of former students,
the membership of which Is country
wide, is being organized to carry this
into effect. On its stationery and in
a conspicuous place on every docu
ment which the committee, or the
university Issues is printed "To per
petuate Valparaiso University as
great, independent, Impartial, non
sectarian, educational Institution, not
privately owned, and allied with no
lodge; racial group or religious de
nomination."
Some time ago, wide circulation
was given to a statement to the effect
that Valparaiso University was about
to be taken over by the Ku Klux
Klan. This report created indigna
tion among former students nnd
among friends of the university which
had had such a long career of great
usefulness. However, the report now
seems to have served a good purpose
for staunch -friends came to the sup
port of the university today nnd there
Is every reason to believe that before
long it will be re-established in its
former glory and that It faces a
greater power for educational good
than ever.
The trustees of Valparaiso Univer
sity recently adopted a code of prin
clples upon which the institution pro
poses to base its future operations.
This code proclaims opposition to
"any individual, ' group, lodge, church
or society which intentionally en
deavors to separate our people into
class-conscious groups, setting one
against the other In promotion of Ku
Klux Klan and to mean that hence
forth as heretofore Valparaiso Uni
versity cannot be named as an edu
cational institution controlled by any
class organization or any religious
sect, but, on the contrary. Is an estab
lishment open to the education of nil
without thought of race, religion, so
cial standing, wealth, politics or in
fluence.

forum of the Metlford Chamber of

Community federation will be the

forum tomorrow will be preliminary
to the big membership meeting of the
chamber that will be held in the evening.
The forum will be held in the annex

terested In a debate as to whether
the modern battleship had not been
rendered obsolete by the airplane.
Admiral Mark Kerr took the affirm
ative and Viscount Curzon the nega
tive. The decision favored the argu
ments of Curzon.
The Viscount contended that
whether or not the present type of
capital ship was obsolete depended on
whether the battleship could be de
stroyed by under-water boats or .by
aircraft. Jutland proved that the
bomb and torpedo had not gained as
cendancy over the heavy gun. Gun
fire had an accuracy far above that
of the weapons of submarines or
planes. Experiments purporting to
show that the big ship was at the
mercy of hovering planes had been
carried out, but the target ship was
ian obsolete one, and the test had
been carried out In fair weather and
perfect water. The battleship still re
mained the greater factor of naval
strength.
"Admiral Kerr's suggested large
aircraft carrier," Viscount Curzon
said, "was Just as vulnerable as the
big battleship, which after all, could
have Its protective seaplanes."
