KILLED BY TRAIN
HILLSHORO, Ore., Jan. 2. V. P.
Smith, justice of the pease hero the
past ten years, was killed by Southern
Pacific train No. 101 about a mile east
of here this morning.
Smith left th3 tracks when several
warning Blgnals had been sounded
then stepped back in the path of the
train after It was too close to avoid
tunning him down, according to the
engineer's report. The Justice had
been worried about failing health l:r
the past half year or more and was
taking one of his morning walks whei,
struck. .
Smith' had told Mrs. A. Sigler, at
whose home he boarded, that he hail a
premonition that he would die a vio
lent death. A week ago, while getting
off a Southern Pacific red electric
train he slipped and fell .but was not
hurt.
Us wife bad died eighteen years
ago, nnd he had not remarried. His
mother died two years ago. He has a
brother, lliensten Smith of American
Falls, Idaho, nnd a daughter, Nora
Smith, of Forest Grove.

the taking of the bodies of Captain
Sparrow of the United States cruiser
Tacoma and two radio men killed In
an accident aboard the vessel, to the
Prometheus, which is carrying the
bodies to tho states.
Murines from the Prometheus re
ceived the bodies from the naval
school where they had been with a
guard of honor composed of naval
cadets. Mexican naval officers ac
companied the procession to the dock.
The American consul and a largo part
of the American colony were present.
A hydroplane from the Omaha scat
tered flowers over the procession.
Captain Ambroslo Illndcs eulogized
the three naval men.
