Local federal prohibition officers
and county officers are nt work on an
important bootleg case in an effort to
establish a .connection between past
doings and tho arrosts of John W.I
Carl, and Harry C. Tracy of the Jenny
. Creek district. Tho grand jury has
these cases under consideration.
About the middle of the month
; Federal Prohibition Officer Newton
Chanoy 'and Deputy Sheriff George
Alden arrested Tracy for having a
-still and 210 gallons of mash in his
possession. Tho case was brought bo
fore Justice Gowdy at Ashland and
Tracy was bound over to the grand
-Jury, and is in .the county Jail, having
been unable to furnish bond.
i A day or so later, acting on Infor
mation obtained from several sources,
Officers Chaney and Aldon and Chief
of Police McNabb of Ashland, who is
also a deputy sheriff, arrested Carl,
who operates a store and service sta
tion in the Jenny creek distsfct, sev
eral miles from where Tracy had his
BtlU and mash. Only a charge of sell
ing Intoxicating liquor was preferred
against Carl, who pleaded guilty to
this charge before Justice Gowdy at
Ashland. Sentence, however; Is being
reserved, and Carl is being held in
$1000 ball in the city jail at Ashland,
having been unable to urnlsh ball.
In the meantimo various charges
against Carl and Tracy in connection
with liquor law violations, are, being
probed' by tho grand jury, and tho
prisoners are being kept widely sep
arated In different prisons until the
grand- Jury reports on their -cases.

court's conviction .that Cox had com
mitted perjury at his trial In circuit

odd jobs and portering, and was well
liked. His outstanding qualities were
his unswerving honesty, his geniality,
and his devotion to his motherless
boy.
Ho was born In Kansas, where ho
spent 50 years of his life, working for
many years in tho salt mines -of that
state. Later ho tried farming in tho
western section of that state,, and
moved to this city in 1 110. His wife
died in this city in 1012. ,

MAKE ESCAPE, BUT
DENVER, Jan. 23. Overpowering
three sentries who ntood guard over
them with nhotguns, ten military pris
oners from Fort Logan, near hero,
early last evening bound tho guards
with their own woolen leggings, took
their weapons and made a spectacular
dash for liberty from a sand pit In
which they had been working.
Six of the runaways wore captured
a short time later, but the remaining
four, three of whom carried the guards
shotguns, furnished a chase In which
army officers, privatos, deputy sher
