construction of improved highway
from the Oregon state lino to nodding
Calif., aro as follows, according to a
recent official report by tho commis
sion: "From the Oregon lino to two miles
south of Hornbrook, ten ml Ion A
contract was lot on November l'J,
1923, to Dunn and iiaker of Klamath
Falls, Oregon, for HtmightcniiiK. wid
ening and gravel surfacing this unit.
The contractors havo put up a bond to
finish the work In 150 days or pay a
penalty of $2 50 a day for each, day lu
excess of the agreement. The allot
ment for this work is approximately
$210,000.
"From, two miles south of Horn
brook to Yreka, fifteen miles This
unit Is now graded eighteen to twenty
feet wide and Is surfaced with gravel.
It will bo maintained In tho best pos
sible condition during tho year, aaid
on four miles of this dlbiance, Imme
diately north of Yreka, wo expect to
widen the road to thirty feet nnd rc
surfaco with gravel during 112 4.
"Quard rails aro being placed in
thin vicinity at a cost of $26,ouf.

"yreka to Gazelle, seventeen and
one-half miles Grading of this unit
to a width of thirty foot has been
completed, and resurfacing Is now
under way. This work should bo com
pleted by February 1st. and will
eliminate one of tho worst sections of
tho old road and tho last upon which
state construction had not previously
taken place. Tho allotment for this
work Is $212,000.

"From tho Siskiyou county lino to
Halfway creek. In Shasta county. Tho
road will be resurfaced with gravel
during the yeur and it is possible that
some twelve miles will be widened
and straightened and new surfacing
upplied.

Shasta county, ten and one-half milcd.
A contract wns uwarded to tho Neva
da Constructing company of Fallon,
on January 10th for widening, straight
cning und resurfacing this unit with
gravel. Tho work will bo underway
in tho near future. The allotment for
this contract is $4!)2,000.
"From Uayha to Kedding, ten miles
a contract for widening, straighten
ing and paving this unit was awarded
tho Kaiser 1'avlug company of Oak
land on December 17th. Preliminary
work already is underway. Tho allot
ment for this work Is $-138,00.
$100,000 for Surfacing
"Five rock crushers have been In
stalled north of Kedding to supply
rock surfacing for the roadway until
paving can bo completed. Tho pre
liminary allotment for this work is
$100,000, which amount has been ap
propriated from motor vehicle fun Oh.
"It is the plan of the California
commission and its engineers to havo
tho entiro highway from tho Oregon
lino to ltcdding, 113 miles outsido of
municipalities now unpaved, widened
to give a clear roadway. Inside of
ditches for drainngo of twenty-four
to thirty feet; In fact, tho greater por
tion will bo widened thirty feet as
nothing less will adequately care for
the growing traffic.

"The road also will be straightened
to provido a minimum radii on curves
of not less than 800 feet. Our new
surveys Indicate that tho road can
bo shortened nearly five miles be
tween Itedding and Duusmulr, nlone,
by tho work wo are undertaking.
'Tavemonts ot these sections until
this straightening and widening has
been accomplished would bo folly and
is not contemplated. Tho road must
bo properly locatod first. However,
paving will bo pushed as rapidly as
funds und tho conditions of-tho new
grndes will permit and none will bo
laid less than twenty feet In width.
"It will tako somewhere In the
neighborhood of $5,000,000 to com
plete tho Job, but when the real facts
of tho situation become known the
entire state will be demanding that
California make good promises to her
northern neighbors."

Has Thrilling Time in Alaska
'l'ick-a-back" is the novel mode of
travel experienced In Alaska, accord
ing to a report of Miss Marie 13. Fu.ll
dlne, Red Cross nurse for Juneau,
Alaska, chapter. In describing a trip
of 200 miles to Yakutat. the extreme
westward part of her district,' Miss
Falldino says:
"While in Yakutat a case was re
ported which necessitated my travel
ing in a fishing boat, motor boat, row
boat, and pick-n-back in midstream
with a brown bear looking on from
the shore.'
"The only boat which etops at this
village," writes Miss Falldine, "makes
the trip once a month. It stops on Its
way in and then when coming back
bo this gave mo 11 days in which to
work in the village.
All Kinds of Problems
"I called on as many homes as I
could and talked with as many of the
people as possible. Everywhere I
went I found a groat need for medical
supervision. Uoth natives nnd whites
came with problems of all kinds, so
cial service problems, mponshine, pool
hall and general conditions in the vil
lage, which la in a most unsanitary
condition.
"The houses are built on the side
hill, 'one row above another; nil garb
age is dumped outside the doors and
no attention to proper drainage is
given anywhere. The fish are dried
outside tho houses, hung on racks and
consequently this draws huge flies.
"Tho natives themselves are dissat
isfied with conditions that is. some
of tho more progressive ones; but they
are nlmost helpless themselves. They
do not understand how to go about
making changes.

ported to me and I set out to make
my call, which required a round trip
of 120 miles on a fishing boat. I
went as far as I could ln"the boat and
then took a small motor boat up the

tax, federal banks. League of Na
tions or world court, equal suffrage.

eering and to Wall street domination
of our money or to any law that gives
special favors to the rich."

verdict of the circuit court jury last

tuberculosis; that her husband was

that there was no one to care for her
but her eight-year-old daughter, who
was also taking care ofiier little four-year-old
brother. There was very
little to eat and the house filthy and
the masqultos so thick that the family
all slept under soiled coverings over
tho bed which, though it did keep out
the mosquitos, also shut out the air.
"After caring for the mother and
leaving a few supplies we had to re
trace our steps and were just about
to set out across the water, pick-a-pack
again, when we spied a brown
bear. Wo had no gun but we did
j have a little dog. It may havo been
the dog, or it may have been because
Ithe fish were so plentiful along the
shore that bruin did not pay any nt
jtention to us, but waddlod off down
1 tho shore. AVe did not stop to make
J very close acquaintance with him, but
hurried out to tho rowboat . which

MINER'S MEETING

tionul President John L. Lewis, called
the biennial convention ot the United
Mine Workers of America to order to
day. , '
Before facing the 1000 delegates,
representing tho 5000 local unions and
a half million members of the organ
ization, Mr. Lowis talked with newspa
per men.
"There will'be demonstrations," he
said, "when Alexander Howalfs rein
statement is proposed, but there is a
difference between noise and action.
Only fifty of tha 500 locals have ssnt
resolutions .asking that ho be taken
back and district number twelve (Illin
ois) was withdrawn its official support
of him. That district gave him $100,
000 when his fight was at its height."
President. Lewis indicated that he
hoped for a renewal of the wage con
tract which is In effect now. "There
havo been only a few resolutions," he
said, "demanding increases. There are
several demanding shorter worl,'.ng
hours.
"There are resolutions from several
states asking that the provision of the
constitution against membership in the
Ku Klux Klan be withdrawn. That
ban was written in when the k!an was
first organized. It provides expulsion
as a penalty .whenever klan member
ship is proved, but who can prove it?
"There are also resolutions denounc
ing the klan Iri strong language. Ail of
them, pro and con will be referred to
tho committeo on legislation."
