The third annual banquet of the
Jackson County Medical society at the
Hotel Medford last night, beginning
at 7 p. m., was a very pleasant affair
attended by 32 persons consisting of
the members, who are mostly from this
city and Ashland, and their wives and
guests, i . '
. The society holds periodical meet
ings during the year at the homes of
various members and then gathers (or
one big. social dinner once a yoar like
that ot last night in compliment to the
Wives for their trouble In entertaining
at the monthly meetings.
Hence last night's affair of which
Drs. W. R. Adams and K. J. Conroy
were the committee in charge, was a
purely social one, during which the
gathering spent a couple of hours in
enjoying one of Emll Mohr's good
feeds and in having a good time gen
erally, The next regular meeting of the so
ciety will be held In February at Ash
land at the home of Dr. George W.

'Ponjola" at Rialto

"Ponjola," which opened yesterday
at the Rialto theater for a four day's
engagement, is .ib sear to picture per
fection as any photoplay that has been
seen in this city for many months.
Those, who enjoy exciting drama,
thrills and romance, blended In tho
proper proportions, have a treat in
store for them In this powerful, pulse
quickening story of the African veldt.
There are a numbor of unique Inci
dents in the play which are entirely
new to pictures, one especially. This
is where one of the characters, a de
signing type of "vamp," practices her
charm on the heroine, believing of
course, that she is a man.
Miss Nilsson makes a convincing
man. The illusion is perfect.
The part of Lundl Druro, the drink
sodden hero, is admirably played by
James Kirkwood. Joseph Kllgoro is
excellent in the "heavy" role. The
other parts are capably done by Ruth
Clifford, Edwin Sturgis, Claire Mc
Dowell, Claire Du Brej and Bernard
Randall.

French Fiscal

ciated Press) The French cabinet
today ndopted without important
changes the final draft of tho gov
ernment's program of fiscal reform.
Including the monsure providing a
20 per cent Increase In taxation. The
legislation will be presented to the
chamber of deputies this afternoon
by Minister of Finance De Laatyrle.
One of the measures approved by
the cabinet authorized the govern
ment to suspend by simple decree all
imports wherever from, thnt are not
national necessities. Another pro
vided for economies In tho public
service alone of one rdllion francs.

The Inter-church Athletic lnriRue
opened their haskctbull neason Tues
day nitrht with a game between the
Baptist and South Methodist church
in which the Baptists won by a score
of 12 to 6. The second gamo between
the North Methodist and Presbyterian
church was won by the North Metho
dist 11 to 7. Tho second series of
Karnes will bo played tonight starting
promptly at 7:15 with a game between
the Baptists and Presbyterians and
the Christian and South Methodists.

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 17. A lead
of four strokes in the first day of
competition, obtained by brilliant and
consistent playing in a high wind, and
the ability to conquer the difficult
tricky greens that baffled a number
of international! famous golf stars,
yesterday gave MacDonald Smith, San
Francisco professional, the 1924 open
ing golf championship of California.
Smith finished with the low score of
295 In the state open' tournament on
tho Los Angeles country club links,
leading "Ed die Loos, Annandale, Cal.,
professional by one stroke, Loos beln
runner up with a score of 195.
Third honors were divided between
Abe Espinonn, Oakland, and Harold
Sampson, professional at the munici
pal links, San Francisco, each having
a total of 297.
To MacDonald Smith went the
added honor of defeating the strong
est field ever entered in a Pacific
coast tournament, internationally fa
mous stars from both amateur and
professional ranks competing.
The close finish, with the galleries
keyed to a high pitch nnd with five
in the running, provided a( touch ot
the dramatic when Eddie Loos missed
a tie for low with MacDonald Smith,
Loos hit the hall for a thirty foot putt
on tho final hole and a roar went up
from the gallery when it looked as If
the ball was headed for the cup. It
missed the pin by inches and Loos lost
his right to meet MacDonald Smith in
a play-off for the title.

The preliminary organization of the
Medford Professional and Business
Women's association was accomplish
cd last night at a combination dinner
business meeting held at the Hotel
Medford, which was attended by about
60 well known feminine workers of the
city employed in business and tho pro
fessions. In the absence of graco being said at
the big banquet table Miss Grayce
Telch presided as chairman, and after
an enjoyable social time spent in din
ing and getting acquainted, the work
ot getting the new local organization
launched was begun and a constitution
was adopted. The formal speaker and
guest was Miss Gertrude Anno Gooph
forth, national secretary ot the Y.

Tho association will have a mem
bership of at least 75, as in addition
to those present last night 25 other
eligible women signed up to become
charter members.
The next meeting of the body at
which tho organization work will be
completed and officers elected, will be
hold next Wednesday, with Miss Adoio

sociation, present. She will also make
an address' on this ocension.

was afire off tho southwest coast of
Washington, started toward Puget
Sound this morning after the firo had
been brought under control near the
mouth of the Columbia river.
The first messages sent by tho
Silverado about 3 a. m., reported tho
fire in No. 1 hold and expressed fear
that oil In her cargo would be ignited.
Ijiter the vessel made for this port,
but after tho fire was brought under
control just outside this harbor tho
Silverado turned and resumed her
voyage to Seattle, to which port sho
was bound from San Kranciweo.

cil. Kvery district in the county is
being iirg'd to send a delegate os a
representative to this meeting. The
object is to promote Interest between
the home, nnd nchool. and the stron
ger organisations may be of some

zation is having a very prosperous
growth all over the state, and it Is
very desirous that Jackson county
may become 100 percent in member
ship. School officials are seeing the

cording to information from San
Francisco, tho Portland contracting
firm of Kelly nnd Sullivan has been
awarded a contract for building the
grade for eleven and ono-half miles
of tho Southern pacific's Kugone
Klamath Falls cut off from a point
five and one-half mites southerly
from 'Oak Ridge. It is said that the
railroad company will receive bids
about Kebruary 1 for furnishing the
cross ties nnd laying steel rails.
