advices received from the affected
district of the N'lhon Dempo, a Japa
nese press association here.
The reports state . that the em
peror and empress are safe at Nu
maUuu, despite widespread destruc
tion in that city, in which many
houses are said to have been shaken
dowa. Tho imperial villa, located at
Xumudzu, was not dumaged, howevor,
the reports state.
The urea of greatest damask is said
to -have been between the towns of
Goteinba, which Is about eighty
miles southwest of Tokio, and Koozu,
and southward In tho vicinity of Ha
kone, according to reports received
over a single railway line kept in ope
ration by tho Kobe, railway bureau be
tween Tokio and Honshu.
Slight damage was suffered by tho
district between Tokio and Koozu, ad
vices from this source stated. The
quake was felt at Nagoyu, about 200
miles southwest of Tokio, in the pro
vince of Owari and in Shizouka, In
Suruga province, along Suruga bay.

The meteorological observatory at
Osaka announced after the quake that
the width of the osillations recorded
in the seismograph by the earth shock
was 3!) fi-10 millimeters. Thequake
lasted for fourteen minutes. Tho
sejHmological renter apparently was
off tho Klshu coast. It was stated.
The Eastern News agency has re
ceived reports that the damage , to
Tokio was not extensive, but that it
was severe in the K wan to district and
east of Hakone, In Suruga province
where telephone, telegraph and train
service was stopped as a: result of
dumage wrought by the earth shocks.
Advices received byS thd Nlhon
Dempo at six o'clock this morning
from Osaka stated that there was no
sign of any outbreak of fire at Tokio.
A report from Takazoki, a city near
Tokio, however, stated that telephone
service at the capital had been sus
pended, and the street railway linea
put out of commission. The ' WateH
system, although crippled, "was being
operated at that time, it was said. '

son Caffery, American charge at To
kio, cabled today that Tokio and Yo
kohama "suffered a severe earth
quake shock this morning' 'causuig
temporary suspension of railway ser
vice, the water supply, the electric
lighting system, and telegraphic and
telephonic communication. He said
Tokio newspapers estimated - that
fifty persons were killed. -
No Americans were reported among
the dead. Frederic D. K. Leclercq,
second secretary of the American em
bassy, suffered a fractured wrist, Mr.
Caffery said, adding that with ' this
exception tho staffs of the embassy
and the consulate " general had suf
fered no injury.

' WASHINGTON, Jan. 15. The
latest Japanese earthquake, as re
corded on the Georgetown university
seismograph, continued for almost
two hours and1 reached Its maximum
.intensity between 6:46 a. m and 6:60
a. m? Tokio time.
Father Tondorf, In charge of the
instrument, reported that the first
.tremors were picked up at 6:16 a. m
and that they continued until about
8 a. m.

quake which began at 6:45 a. m. to
day around the Nagano prefecture is
supposed to have been centered at
Matsumoto. The damage Is not known
here.

strong tremors. Osaka and Koyoto
felt the shocks slightly.
, Nagano prefecture is situated on a
table land In the central part of the
main island of Japan. Bilk is the
most important industry of the region.
