COSTA RICA LEADS ,
OF PHONE ETIQUETTE
',r? CHICAGO. Costa Rica is Betting
the' telephone etiquette of the world,
according to Frank M. Kenney of tho
. International .Western Eloctrlc com
pany, Just back from aftor a visit of
seven months to San Jose. Ho says
the Costal Rican gentleman or lady
' never answers tho telephone that
duty Is left to a servant.
f '' "Costa Rica has absolutely no use
for telephone numbers' said Mr.
Kenny. "All calls are made by ask
ing the operator for the other sub
scriber. .Consequently, putting thru
p. call is sometimes a long process
Something like diplomatic negotia
tions, particularly if the servant happens-
to be out of sorts or the tele
phone operator Is not up on all the
social registers of-the community.
Virtually all telephone calls 'In Costa
Rica are put throufth between three
and five in .the afternoon and very
few. at night. Tho Coata Rica business
day begins at seven. Eight in the
morning is. late. Then, at ten-thirty
the shops close for breakfast, to re
open -'again .at twelve-thirty..

and a great thudding under tho stern.
I looked over the side and saw a big
shark with his head and mouth in rib
bons. He must have gone fox a feed
off the propeller. It killed him. Ho
simply rolled round and round like a
corkscrew and went straight down till
out of sight."
'Within tho liaw," Ulnlto
"Within tho Law," which began a
three days engagement at the Itialto
theatre yesterday, makes even, more
secure tho leadrshlp of Norma Tal-
madgo as a dramatic star.
A classic of the American stage, in
which Jane Cowl made her biggest
hit, this Bayard Vollier play is now
a classic of the silent drama, with
Norma Talmadge winning fresh
laurels. . Love, romance and thrills
combine to make it as fascinating and
as exciting as a motion flcture can be.
Much credit, of course, must, go to
the genius of the director, . .Frank
Lloyd, and to the splendid support of
an ynusually fine cast.
Norma Talmadge, in the role of
Mary Turner, a department store girl
railroaded to prison for a theft she
did not commit, is a heart-stirring fig
ure. On tho completion of her prison
term sho vows to "get square" with
tho store owner who was responsible
for the miscarriage of justice, but
determines to stay always "within tho
law." I '
"Within the Law,'" a First National
picture, will remain, at tho Itialto
theatre till Thursday night.
The orchestra that Madame Pav
lowa carries with her would In itself
be an unusual entertainment. The
conductor of this excellent body of
musicians, M. Theodore Stier began
his career in London In 1903. In
1908 he founded the London Classical
orchestra and gave concerts at tho
then Bechatein hall. At one of these,
in 1910, M. Stier was gratified to
recognize Madame Pavlowa in tho
audience. Tho result of the , famous
danseuse's appreciation of the maes
tro's efforts was the offer to M. Htler
to become her personal musical di
rector, which enviable post he has
creditably filled for the past twelve
years. This, states Mr. Stier, Is the
greatest satisfaction in his profession
al career this close and delightful
association with the world's premier
danseuse." ;
On tour with' Pavlowa M. Stier pre
sides over an orchestra of symphonic
proportions, the Instrumental section
of tho Ballet Russo comprising a bril
liant body of executants who, both
individually and collectively, are able
to meet every artistic requirement.
Many of the musical, scores, set to
Pavlowa's ballets and diyortissments,
are beautiful and -inspiring in them
selves,, and aside from the interest
shown fy choregraphic devotees in
the exquisite art of tho international
danscuso and her famous associates.
