Jo'sojtihlno county Christmas' stocking
will be filled to overflowing this year
for Announcement was made today of
a half million dollar development pro
gram to be undertaken immediately
afteC the first of the year by the Chicago-'
Land company. The Chicago
Land company owns some 1800 acres
of vnllev land, the erreatoi nart of
which lies within the Grants Pass ir-l
rigatlon district. In addition to this
there are some 800 acres of the Leon
ard Estate, on tho east side of the
Applegato river, which will be in
cluded in tho development.
The plan, as outlined by J. W. Lu
cns.'when ho was here a short time
ago; .is to divide the Innds Into five,
ten, ID and 20-acre tracts, clear them,
plant alfalfa or clover as Is best suit
ed and build a complete set of build
ings. These tracts will then be sold
to settlers, In an Improved condition
so- that they can Btnrt immediately
In their farming enterprise. The
lands are to be sold on easy terms
with deferred payments at a low
rate of Interest. '; ;

Grants Pass within a few weeks from
which the work will be carried on.
Othor offices aro to bo established In
tho principal clt,lea on tho coast. Mr.
Leonards Idea j also Is to establish a
connection in every, small' town in the
middle west, these plan's to be worked
out as tho organization glows. Tho
settlers will bo Interested in tho com
munity through the connections estab
lished by .tha Chicago Land company j
and will result in the bringing or
hundreds ot new settlers on tho lands

SEATTLE, Dec. 26. P. J. O'Drien,
35 negro, who claims to be working for
federal narcotic officers, was shot sev
eral times, perhaps fatally, at the
Porters' club, GH Jackson street)' ot
2: 30 -o'clock this morning.
Police arrested Edward Dewltt,
white, age unknown, who lives at a
hotel nearby. Negro bystanders, wit
nesses of the fight, assert Hewitt at
tacked O'Brien. Dewitt would not ad
mit that lie had shot O'Brien and de
nied ownership . of a revolver, with
which he was confronted.
Negro witnesses of tho affair also
stated that O'Brien, known to them
under the name of Kelly, confronted
the white man, claiming he was a fed
eral narcotics officer and started to
search him. O'Brien, they say, appar
ently took somo money from Dewltt
and the white man shouted that he
was bolng robbed, drew a gun and fir
ed. - After the shooting lie was sot
upon by the negroes and beaten about
the head.
Three silver, dollars were found In
the pocket of O'Brien's overcoat when
he was taken to the station.
Two of tho Bhots went through the
negro's abdomen and one hit his arm.

ried last week at Carthage, N. C.
APPLEGATE
The school closed last Friday to
take up again Monday. Dec. 31. This
marks the end of three and one-half
months of school. This particular

gate children as one bright and pleas
