Mrs. Keeley. In a statement to the
police, declared she found her Huh
band and Gillespie drinking together
In her husband's office at an early
hour Sunday morning. She said oh
demanded that her husband accom
pany her home and that in a dispute
Gillespie moved toward her and de
manded that she apologize for her
actions.
She said she warned him that she-
had ft revolver and that when he con
tinued to approach the revolver was
discharged.
Mrs. Gillespie, who was present
when her husband was shot, contra
dieted thta statement In her story of
the events of the night. Mrs. Olden
plo declared that Mrs. Keeley bran
dished her revolver without warning
and fired the shot without due pro-
vocation.
All witnesses are being examined
by 'officials in an effort to determine
how the shooting occurred.

It has already spent nearly two Bil
lions of dollars and now is npending
nearly half a billion dollars in their
behalf. That obligation It must and
will continue to fulfil in utmost mea
sure. And it Is one of the most im
portant of the duties and privileges of
the chief executive to minister to the
wants and needs of these wards and
creditors of the nation.
"Hut tho fit and able-bodied are
offered the opportunity open to every
other citizen. The government has no
money to distribute to any class of
its citizens that it docs not take from
the pockets of the people and the pay
ment of a bonus to millions of our
former soldiers could only be accom
plished at a cost to the whole com
munity, including the veterans them
selves, far outweighing the benefits
intended to be. conferred. If I felt
that a soldiers bonns represented a
great need nnd a proper obligation
which should be fulfilled by this na
tion, I certainly would not make a
recommendation which would be ad
verse thereto.
"We have now reached a point In our
financial program --where we can
lighten the tax burden of tho people,
which is an added reason for taking
a firm stand against any and all pro
grams of spending that would tend to
absorb the expected margin between
receipts nnd expenditures."
