PAT McARTHUR.
THE SUDDEN and totally unexpected death of former Congress
man l'at McArthur, tomes as a stunning shock to the people of
Oregon, regardless of political affiliations.
Comparatively a young man, enjoying as far as the public knew
the best of health, this sudden passing, adds another name to the
long roll of useful men, called to the beyond before their time.
Pat McArthur represented the type of public man, all too rare in
Oregon today and particularly needed in the state and in the nation
with polities so largely dominated by demagogues and straddlers.
Whether or not one agreed with l'at McArthur, there was never
any doubt as to just where he stood. He whs neutral on nothing. One
of the ablest men Oregon ever sent lo Congress, he met defeat ut the
last election, lagely because he refused to stultify himself, by barter
ing his convictions and his personal integrity for political advantage.
His rect.it entrance as a candidate for the United States senate
was typical of the man. tin alone had the courage to openly oppose
the dominance of the Ku Klux Klan. Indifferent to the advise of his
friends that such action would spell inevitable defeat, he plunged into
the contest, shouting defiance to invisible government, and deter
mined to rise or fall on the clear-cut issue, of what he conceived to be
the only policy of true Americanism faith to those principles of re
ligious liberty and tolerance, which formed the corner stone of the
American constitution.
Unfortunately there is no one in sight who can take his place.
For in addition to being a fearless man, l'at McArthur, was an excep
"ionally able man. His death will be mourned by all citizens who love
courage in public life, by all who believfethat the greatest curse of
American politics todaj' is the windy demagogue, the gum shoe op-p-Ttunist,
who is willing to appeal to passjons and hatreds, however
destructive, if such action only promises to bring in the votes.

Those who would limit the supreme court's authority to veto laws,

PREHISTORIC MAN.
sL
AT SANTA BARBARA they found some forty cubits under
ground, the skull of some man now unknown, which skull
was largely made of bone. ' And scientists, supremely wise, have
viewed it with their brooding eyes, and scratched it with inspee
tive nails, and weighed it on the city scales; its owner rambled to
and fro about a million years ago. I view the ruin and I sigh,
"The poor old fish why did he diet But since his skull is twice
as thick as that of any modern hick, we may assume he was a
chump who lacked the sense to dodge the dump. Perhaps he
drove, with nerve and gall, in his rude homemade carryall, and
hogged the road and wouldn't mind the by laws published for his
'kind, and hit up fourteen miles a day, where seven miles would
'be. O. K., and then, while skidding round a curve, a tire blew out,
he lost his nerve, and ditched his boat and broke his neck and
perished in the twisted wreck. I look back through a mist of
tears across about a million years, ami see the erowner hold his
quest, and hear him say, " Tis for the best ; if bonehcad drivers
will get gay, and hit up fourteen miles a day, they surely furnish,
when they croak, a lesson fine for other folk."

An ulcer Is a raw sore. A varicose
ulcer is such a sore on the leg of one
who has varicose veins. Unnum
bered thousands of people with vari
cose ulcers keep
their ulcers for
years on end just
because they Imag
ine the ulcers can
not or should not be
healed.
Now it- does seem
strange that any
body should imag
ine that an ulcer
should not be healed
doesn't it? . I mean
Jt seems strange if
you h a v e n't any
such trouble yourself. Yet in this
great army of unfortunates with vari
cose ulcers there is one division of
sadly misinformed sufferers who act
ually fear to have their ulcers healed.
Head this letter:
"My Dear Dr. Brady: .
. "I have a large varicose ulcer on
jny. leg. from the ankle half way up
to the knee. I suffer a great deal of
lalh and-itching from it My family
doctor strongly advises me to have it
cured, says it can be cured, and that
after it Is cured a rubber stocking
should be worn. liut dozens of people
tell me that If I get it cured it will go
to other parts of the body and that I
won't live long. Please tell me which
is right. Respectfully yours,
Another .mystery I despair of solv
ing Is. why do folks employ a physi
cian, presumably paying a fee for his
advice or attendance, and then weigh
his advice against the gratuitous
advice of "dozens of people"?
Every varicose ulcer can and should
be healed. In a few cases, however,
long neglect or maltreatment, or self
treatment, which amounts to the
same thing. leads to the development
of cancer In the site of the ulcer: then
the chunce of cure becomes proble
matic. In saying that every varicose
ulcer can be healed I do not mean
to imply that I know of a specific
cure or remedy or, method of treat
ment. The treatment must be deter
mined by the Individual requirements
in each case; I have nothing to send
to readers about this.. I mean to say
merely that every varicose ulcar can
be healed by proper surgical treat
ment, such as any good physician is
competent to apply.' And by surgical
treatment I do not mean any kind of
operation necessarily, tho- in some
cases a little , intelligent . operative
treatment starts the healing process
in a long indolent ulcer, for Instance,
the Bkilful (painless) trimming down
of exuberant granulation tissue(proud
flesh) which is preventing the film of
skin from growing In around tho
edges of the ulcer. An ulcer heals by
a growth of skin over it from the
edges, much as a pond freezes over
with a film of Ice.
The pain and discomfort and dis
ability produced by . varicose ulcers
are mostly unnecessary and must be
accredited to wilful neglect or avoid
ance of proper medical care in most
cases. Victims of this condition har
bar not only such misinformation as
that mentioned in the letter nbove but
seem to delight In "trying" all sorts of
remedies or treatments, at great cost,
too. while they worry 'along without
medical advice.
