our people.
' The Bedford Methodist Episcopal
church was1 organized by Rev. W. O.
Simpson on the 16th day of Novem
ber, 1885. Mr. Simpson wns appoint
ed to Ashland and Medford by liishop
Walden August 31, 1886. Rev.' Mr.
Driver was presiding elder ut that
time. .

to use that church once each month.

where tho First National bank now
stands, was rented for Kunduy school
and church services. Mrs. Charlotte -
tubbard was the first Kunday school
superintendent. D. T. Lnwton served!

Sunday schuol. - "

tho first evangelistic meeting hold In I
1887 by tho consecrated Rev. T. I
Jones nnd Rev. Mr. Kales, who for 09

gospel truth. This meeting was hold
In the Medford town hall, was won
derfully blest of Clod and the Metho
dist forcos wero greatly strengthened.

In 1889 while Rev. J. Wi Miller'
was pastor, the church was erected.
The lots wore deeded by D. T. Law-
ton nnd Clark Taylor to the church

completed tho same year, at nn ap
proximate cost of 14000. In 1892 Mrs.
D. T. Ijtwton went to Portland anil
secured tho boll ' from Centlnory
church. The hell was cast In I'hlla
delphla In 1800, shipped around Capo
Horn and Is still In use.
The trustees when the church was
built were: c. H. Hoxie, I. T. Law
ton, Enoch Walker, I. D. Phipps,
fJeorgo Isaacs, Silas Day, Clark Tay
lor. The church building was enlarged
during Rev. E. O. Eidridge's pastor
ate, also an addition built during Rev,
J. C. Ttollln s pastorate.
The first parsonage was Erected on
North Riverside, the lot being donnt.

a stopping place for tho- 'itinerant
ministers, and who was a factor In
the early history of Medford.
A "sewing society" of ten members
wus organized In 1889 at the home or

our present efficient Ladles' Aid,

Our church haB always been thor
oughly and aggressively missionary In
spirit and method. Four 'of our pio
neer members have given distinguish
ed service on tho foreign1 missionary

The Woman's Foreign "Missionary
society was organized in Medford In
1890 with five members. Mrs. Hub
bard, president: Mrs. Lawton, secre
tary; Mrs. Hoxle, treasurer; Mrs.
Feilder, .corresponding secretary and
Julia Feilder. Tho faithful, loyul ser
vice of theso "elect ladies"' '-Is Bhown
by the long terms of office', Mrs. Hub.
bard, six years; Mrs. Fielder, fifteen
years, and Mrs. Luwton, solo survivor
of tho original society, for twenty
years. This organization, 'one of the
strongest of the church, now has a
membership of seventy-six.
' On March, 14, 1907, the' Woman's
Homo- Missionary society was organ
ized With eleven members: Mrs.
Wines, president; Mrs. Lawton, treas
urer; Mrs. ' Kellogg, corresponding
secretary; Mrs. Mickey, recording
secretary. ' The present membership

During Rev. E. L. Thompson's pas
torate in 1891, tho Epworth league
was organized. This live department
has a present membership of one
hundred nnd twenty-five.

In Norway for tuberculosis work, 'In
terested -Miss Emily Bissei of Wil
mington, Del. She had sumo stamps
designed und promoted at a very suc
cessful, although small, sale, tho pro
ceeds of which were used' to build up
a small tuberculosis snnatarium. Sub
sequently, In otiler to secure the ex
tension of tho plnn Miss Blnsel secur-'
ed the co-operallon of tho Red Cross
organization of which she was tin ac

Beginning In 1908 tho Rod Cross
organization -hnd the- seals -designed
nnd printed, helped sell ' them, nnd
turned a share of the proceeds over
to the National Tuberculosis associa
tion 'which did most of the Belling

friendly agreement whereby fill rights
to tne Christmas seal were turned
over to the Tuberculosis association

BEFORE THE JACKSON COUNTY TAX SUPERVISING ANfl
CONSERVATION COMMISSION.
In the Matter of the Consideration of the Budget of Jackson County, Oregon.
ORDER
- rhlB "matter came on to be considered on the 26th day of November,
1928, all of said Commission, namely: TV, H. Phipps. Chalrman;-H. E. Dlm
Ick, Commissioner; J. H. Fuller, Commissioner, and R. E. Sweeney, Secre
tary, being present; the said budget of Jackson County was examined and
considered and officials of said county consulted in reference thereto.
On the 3rd day of December, 1923, the said matter came on for further
consideration, all the members of said Commission being present, whereupon
further consideration and examination of said budget wns had. At said time
the several officials of Oaekson County, to-wit: ' The Sheriff of Jackson
County, the Clerk of Jackson County, the Assessor -of Jackson County, tho
Treasurer of Jackson County, 'and the School Superintendent of Jackson
County, appeared before said Commission and were Interrogated and exam
ined and their opinions obtained in reference to said County Budget for tha
purpose of ascertaining whether or not the said budget or anyitems thereof
might be reduced.
On the 6th day of December, 1923, the said Jackson County Tax Super
vising and Conservation. Commission met agnln in regular seBSion at the
Court House- In -Jacksonville... Jackson County, Oregon, all of said members
being present, as aforesaid, to-wtts. W. K. Phipps. Chairman; E. E. Dlmlck,
Commissioner J. H. Fuller, Commissioner, and R. E. Sweeney, Secretary,
for the further consideration of the Tiudget of Jackson County, Oregon, as
aforesaid. - At said time and place -! appeared- before said commission the
County Commissioners Court of Jackson 'County; to-wit: The County Judge
and the County Commissioners of Jackson County, Oregon, for consultution
and examination for the purpose of ascertaining whether or not any reduc
tion, "or reductions, might be made from said County Budget as the same had
been presented and filed 'and supplied to said Commission.
After the retirement of said Commissioners Court and after due consid
eration and deliberation of the said Commission, It was considered. dooiili-Ti
and determined that two certain items of said budget might with impunity
arid propriety-be reduced, to-wit: The State Tax item of Bald budget and the
Current Expense Fund of said budget, the former in the Bum and amount of
one-half mill thereof and the latter in the sum and amount of one-half mill
thereof and in the aggregate the Bum and amount of one mill, making a total
reduction on said budget of Twenty-eight Thousand ($28,000.00) Dollars.
WHEREFORE; in consideration of the promises, It Is now and hereby
considered and ordered thnt the said budget of Jackson County be, and the
same hereby ts, modified In tho particulars mentioned, to-wit: That the Item
of nine mills for Slate Taxes be, and the same hereby is, modified and re
duced to &: mills and that the item of Current Expense Fund ho, and the
same hereby is, modified and reduced from 5.2 mills to 4.7 mills, making an
aggregate reduction from said budget by tho modification of the items
thereof in tho sum of Twenty-eight Thousand ($28,000.00) Dollars.
' IT IS FURTHER HEREBY CONSIDERED AND ORDERED thnt all tho
other items o"f said budget, and the whole thereof, are -necessary, appropriate
and proper and that they should bo, and hereby are, allowed by suld Commission.-

IT 19 FURTHER HEREBY CONSIDERED AND ORDERED that a
copy of said budget as modified be, and the same hereby Vs. returned and
presented to the County Court of snld Jackson County, Ore;,'lin, and to tho
Assessor of said Jackson County, Oregon, -and that a copy of this order bo
duly -posted as provided by law.
