present prices, the consumer pays $22
for the amount of bread ono barrel
of flour will mako, whilo tho producer
receives only $4.65 for tho wheat
used In that amount of flour. Dr. C. J.
Smith, of 1'ortland, Oregon, represent
ing Governor Pierce of Oregon at tho
wheat conference hero told tho dele
gates in an address today.
Dr. Smith charged tho Association
of Bakers with monopolizing the
flour buying field, maintaining a sys
tem by which tho retail .bread dealer,
tho wheat producer and the cousumer
get llttlo or no benefit.
"Tho bakers association todny buys
eighty per cent of tho flour manufac
tured." said Dr. Smith.
"Under such an ngrcement, It
seems to mo conditions aro such that
the farmers could bo guaranteed $2 a
bushel for this wheat without anyone
suffering and without effect on tho
consumer's pocket book."
Governor William K. Sweet of Colo
rado took exception to a warning to
tho convention yesterday by Kugcne
Meyer, Jr., managing director of the
war finance corporation, to "keep
your organization free of partisan
politics.
"Certainly I would sny," tho gover
nor declared, "we'll keep our organ
iaztion out of politics If the other fel

wheat growers of Saskatchewan de
clared ho did not believe Canada and
the United States could form a mar
keting combination to govern the
price of export wheat as long as the
American growers admit they face

tion cost and when Cannda remains
dependent on 80 per cent of export to
dispose of its wheat crop.
Mr. Mussel man said ho favored
contra I izuil . control of marketing and
warehouses rather than tho pooling
of wheat.
