K. L. Morse, a widely known figure
In Missouri republican politics and
manager of the Lowdcn campaign in
that state In 1920 was questioned in
detail about the deal In connection
with whim the site, of which he was
owner, passed to government control.
Ho was cross examined on the basis
of testimony given yesterday by gov
ernment employes who declared the
transaction was rushed through on
the last day of tho Wilson administra
tion after there had been a last min
ute Increase In tho rental price.
Under questioning by John O'Ryan,
counsel for the committee, Morse
went Into involved explanation of the
varlouB transactions connected with
the hospital plant, with the result
that the committee was left In consid
erable confusion.
Documents and records from which
General O'Ryan read showed that
Morse received a final payment from
tho Veterans' Bureau of $173,000.
Among the individual ltoms was the
190,000 agreed price for the Morse
homestead, $2G,100 for the additional
land which Morse purchased in an
t.grccment with the government and!
JOG. 237, which Morso had expended la
addition to the original buildings.
These made a total of $12,337 and
after deducting tho rental paid by the
government in 1921, General O'Ryan
said tho sum due Morse In the final
settlement apparently was $176,SI6.

hundred and twenty employes of the
Northwestern Klectric company in
this city and at Vancouver, Wash.,
went out today In attempt to enforce
a demand for an Increase In the day's
wage scale from $7.20 to $8 a, day.
The reduction proposed by the man
agement was refused.
Employes taking part in the strike
include linemen, wlremen, station
operators, meter testers and some
other classes, but workmen at the
steam plants are unaffected.
Members of the local International
Brotherhood of Hlectrlcnl Workers in
tho employ of tho Portland Railway.
Light and Power company also havo
made demand for increased pay.
Their agreement with tho company
expires tomorrow night.
Thomas Lee, one of the general
