The Scene of Chinese Bandit Raid

Province of Peanuts and Hair Nets
"Peanuts and hair nets are two im
iortunt products of Shantung. Coal
and iron mines are worked with mod

of bandits as he would In traversing
similar wheat, tobacco and cotton
fields, and truck gardens of our own
country. The population is denser In
this province than in our most dense
ly populated state, Ithode Island. The
climate has been compared to that of
Maine.
"Begun about 15 years ago the hand
manufacture of hair nets has attained
remarkable proportions. The hair
originates' in China, Is shipped to Eur
0e and America to be chemically
treated for decoloring,' is sent back
to merchants in treaty ports and redis
tributed for net making among homes
of the interior. Only recently has an
attempt been made to prepare the hair
in the province.
"The stiKKestlon that the recent
hold-up was participated Id by grand
sons of Confucius, many times re
moved, may seem preposterous to ad
mirers of the peaceful and urbane
sage; yet It is probably literally true.
"Confucius was born at Kufu barely
7Q miles north of the scene of the
bandit attack and be lies burled there,
surrounded by many thousands of his
descendants. The way In which this
family or clan bis persisted and multi
plied deserves to rank aa one of the
biological wonders of .the world. It Is
estimated that 70 per cent of the
population over a large region around
Kufu are descended from the great
teacher. At the little town, which is
at once the birthplace and burial place
of Confucius, lives today his seventy
sixth lineal descendant the 'Holy
Duke,' K'ung.
"The towering mountain, Tal Shan,
China's most holy eminence, lies in
slflht of the Tlentsln-Pukow railway,
not many miles north of the point at
which the attack was made. It has
been deemed holy since before 2200
B. C, Confucius, Taoists and Bud
dhists alike revere this mountain and
have erected shrines at Its foot, on its
slopes and at Its summit. It is a fa'
vorite point for pilgrimage, as many
as 10,000 pilgrims a day making the
Joumey to it during February and
March. Many of these climb labori
ously to the top and there worship.
"The contrast between the barbar
ous China of bandits and the modern
China of western ways was uncon
sciously heightened by the choice of
Llncheng for the attack. There the
branch line of Yihhslen runs to one of
China's greatest coal mines, furnish'
Ing fuel for, its modern factories and
power stations. This largest mine In
Shantung Is operated by a Chinese
company, unlike other mines in the
province which are being exploilted by
foreign capital.
