urged to write another short spiel
for Tho .Mull Tribune
I'oultrymen aeem-to be most in
tercstod In f coding for eggs. ' At least
this Is tho tenor of the letters I re
ceive. Perhaps it is because feed
costs money real monoy and
wherever wo go in this world those
things Interest us most that cost the
most, generally speaking, anyway.
To begin with, in my humble opin
ion, based upon years of experience
and tho opinions of tho best commer
cial poultrymen of the any, the best
feed Is tho cheapest, and not always
is the best feed tho highest In price!
Tho generally it Is.
Tulto wheat, the basis of all poul
try feeds so far as grain Is concerned.
Puget Sound or coast wheat is a poor
feed for poultry, as It is too high in
moisture and too low in protein, tho
very food element that Is valuable to
poultry. Mid-western wheat, or east
ern wheat is far more valuable, tho
it costs but three or four dollars a
ton more to buy for feeding purposes.
For flour, well that's dlfforent again.
As mentioned in the other issue of
this paper, wheat Is the most nearly
balanced ration for a laying hen, nnd
yet it is far from being a bnlanced
ration so far as eggs aro considered.
Corn is farther off, being high In fut
nnd enrbohydrates, heat elements.
Ono hundred; pounds of corn will
product 126 whites of eggs nnd 305
yolks! Anyone can see what would
happen If poultry was fed corn only.
Tho fowls would bocomo too fat nnd
tho eggs thoy did lay would contuln
many double yolks. Remember,
poultrymen, that hens which nro too
fnt will not lay well. And too much
fattening feeds, starchy foods, such
as tablo scraps nnd grain (only) have
a tumlency to bring this about.
In selecting an egg muiili I do not
advocnto one that shows more than
18 or 19 per rent protein, as one that
Is 20 or 21 per cent Is very apt to
.force your fowls nnd this will bring
on a premature molt along In 'he
early months of January or February
a condition that should be avoided it

Lighting too heavily during the fall
and winter will nlso bring this nbout
and the two together makes It quite
a problem for tho average poultry

Commercial Mushes.
Not being interested In selling an
egg mash nt this time I can write
unbi.isedly nnd I truthfully state my
conviction when 1 sny that the com
mercial egg mash Is far better for
the average person to buy una use
than to attempt to make his or her
own. And 111 tell you why.
In the first place all the reputable
feed manufacturing houses employ
feed experts, most of them chemists
as well. These men with their equip
ment, are "able to balance the egg ra.
tions to a nicety which cannot be at
tempted by a man on the poultry
farm. Ho hasn't the equipment to
make analyses with, wouldn't know
how If ho had, and could not get the
proper ingredients for his egg mash,
nino times out of ten when he went
to his" feed store to buy.
In the second place the mills' are
buying in such largo quantities that
the finished product, ready for the
hen to eat, costs less than many of
the ingredients would cost the poul
tryman, not to say anything about
the labor of mixing the mess when he
hnuled all the "makln's" home.
In tho third place the laws of the
states out here mako It Impossible for
tho mills to put In anything that Is
not stated on tho togs, and the food
value must nlso be printed ' on the
sack or the tag attached to the sack,
so, the fooder Is protoctod as never
before, even If the Competition be
tween mills woro not so keen as it
really Is. '
In my experience I can sny that
poultrymen have less loss from' dls
easo resulting from inferior feeds
whero n commercial mash is used
than whero a homo-made mixture is
fed. Tho tendency always Is where
I hnvo Investigated, for tho poultry
mnn who mixes his own mash to buy
the cheapest possible Ingredients.
Ono largo poultrymnn even bought
digester tankage and used as meat
scrap with horrlblo results! Ho was
not Inexperienced either he had
nearly 10,000 fowls at the lime.

market, helping the "poultrymnn to

ing about three miles from Berwyu,

stroyed a residence near that town.
. LAKEWOOD, N.. J., April 27. For
est fires which burned over twenty
square miles in Ocean county and de
stroyed property, valued at $250,000,
were extinguished early today by 600
volunteers.. The First Methodist
church and several homes and build
ings at Cedar Bridge were destroyed
as well as many camps along the
Metedeconk river. A man whose iden
tity has not been disclosed is held on
suspicion of having set the fire.
