When one considers why and how Harding was nominated, as the
safe, sane and amiable mouthpiece of the congressional bloc, as the
100 per cent evangelist of orthodox Republicanism, this development
may well be regarded as sensational. "'
Today's pronouncement may mark the parting of the ways. It
will certainly mark a mile post in the president's career, for from
now on Mr. Harding must be the true leader of his party or he must
go down to defeat.

Can President Harding successfully carry out the role of party
leader? That is the big question. Obviously he is handicapped by
temperament, habit, and inclination, lie doesn't like struggle, stress
and combat He is fundamentally easy going. He knows it. So
do his party opponents.
But as professor James discovered many years ago, every indi
vidual has latent capacities, unknown even to himself, which periods
of great stress often develop. It is by no means improbable that in
the nextfew months, President Harding will develop them.
One thing is sure if he doesn't develop them, if he yields before
the strain of responsible leadership, then he will break his party, and
lale he may even then secure the nomination, his defeat at the polls
v.-;il be practically certain. t
President Harding has reached the big crisis in his career. He
c n't 'jo back. He must go forward. From both a personal and a na
tional standpoint, it is to be hoped that he goes forward to firm lead
i r-hip and victory.
