There Is a spirit of unrest sweeping
this globe from stem to gudgeon and
at least 97 per cent of the same Is
directed against that noble Christian
purifying organization, so long ma
ligned by the hostile press, known as
the Crucified Crusaders of Columbia,
and which Is being diabolically at
tacked by Romo, Chicago, Milwaukee,
and Watklns, Oregon, but only yester
day the Most-Noblo-Get-The-Ilacon In
formed mo that there was no truth In
it. The man arrested In the basement
of the White House, charged with
attempting to blow up that structure,
proved that he was only setting off a
skyrocket. The kept newspapers went
Into a frenzy over this trivial incidont,
and endeavored to mako the public
believe they cared whether the Whlto
House fell down on the President's
Jioad or not. True, the skyrocket was
surrounded, with dynamite. . Is not
dynamite an agont ot Mankind, used
extensively by anarchists and road
contractors. The way they are honor
ing I am convincod that all the editors
are having trouble with their, con
sciences, and , I am also reasonably
sure that yours Is not functioning pro
perly, you miserable pup, you skunk,
you tool of Wall Street and the devil.

THERE is nothing mysterious about the California spirit. There
is no inuV'ic in that name. The people south of tho Siskiyoua
nre no different thuu the people north of tieiri. -
The California spirit has not made California prosperous ; Culi
fornia prosperity has made the California spirit. The truth is that
California has been blessed by Nature, as probably no other state in
the country has been blessed. When one considers what California
hns been given, no one marvels at the senaticnal success California
has made. ,
When natural 'resources were allotted in tltis country, California
was given more wealth per square mile than any other section of the
continent. It was given nearly all of the gold, iti was given nearly all
of the oil, it was given the climate", not necessarily the best climate or
the most healthful climate, as health statistics from Portland and
Los Angeles can testify, but the mild, dry, sunny climate, that most
human beings in the Kast and Middlewest prefer.
All that the people of California have done is this: They have
made the most of their opportunities. Success breeds success, and
naturally with a gold rush in the early days, an oil rush later, and a
tourist rush mixed between, the Californians were presented wjth
the cream, and all they had to do was skim it.

So it is perfectly foolish cither to bow down in wonder before the
much-lauded California spirit, or to deny the true greatness of that

ton. But these two states have peculiar advantages, which California
hiis not, and one of the most obvious is that where California has
been developed and exploited to the limit, the northwest, particularly
Oregon, has in a sense, not been developed at all.
The best thing for Oregon to do as we see it, is to forget California
.and concentrate upon doing what she can do best. Oregon has a far
healthier climate and a better all-the-year-around climate, than many
sections of California; it has far better hunting and fishing and a
more inspiring and more uncivilized wilderness, things not to be dis
regarded, when the tourist crop is concerned, it has more timber it
has unlimited water power, it has a greater proportionate area of po
tentially fertile, but undeveloped land.
Let Oregon once enjoy a fraction of the unearned increment Cali
fornia enjoyed, and there will be no criticism to make of the Oregon
spirit. As Dr. Chapman said Oregon suffers from an inferiority
complex. The best way to lose this is to forget California and get
together on an Oregon program built accordance with Oregon con
ditions, Oregon resources and Oregon needs. .... ...

FORGOTTEN PROMISES.
I RECALL how I departed from my home, long years ago,
how my aunt was brokeu-heartcd, and I saw her sad tears
flow. "Oh, my heart is sad and heavy," said my aunt, "and life
seems bleak; write to me, my darling nevvy, write a letter once
