A goor! Monday night audience was
present at the First Baptist church
last night to hear Dr. S. J. Reid de
liver his second Passion Week ad
dress. The Seven Sayings ot Christ
on the cross constitute the themes for
discusslson. The second saying, "To
day thou sbalt be with me In para
dise" was helpfully presented. Christ
was not crucified alone, said the
speaker, there was a thief on either
side. That was fitting, for it was his
habit to be found among sinners.
Everything thaj was done with mal
ice was turned to the glory of Christ.
When Christ said on the cross.
Father forgive them tbey know not
what they do, the whole Jewish
teaching of the Old Testament was
swept away, and all men could be
thereafter be forgiven for the asking.
The dying thief heard Christ, and
also the remarks of the crowd. The
thief was convlcated and converted
on the cross. He was not baptized,
but was saved, for baptism is not es
sential to salvation. There wis a
thief on one who was saved, and a
thief on the other cross, who was
not saved. The cross is always de
cisive. It alwayu separates human
ity. We are all on one side or the
other. How the confession of the
dying thief under such trying condi
tions puts to shame the cowardice c.f
people today! The dying thief stood
for Christ alone. As the thief was
dying he was born again. The thief
spoke of Christ as king, bo faith saw
farther than sight. He believed
there was a kingdom somewhere, and
Christ was king. "When thou cont
est into thy kingdom, remember me"
said the thief. "Today thoult be with
me in paradise," replied Christ. This
saying took the anguish out of the
soul of the dying thief, and has done
that for millions since. It is a short
trip to Paradise, a mere heart's, beat.
A dark cloud hangs over the other
cross, for one thief was not saved. He
was lost not because he was a sinner,
but because he rejected Christ. So
today the moral man may be lost, and
the sinner may be saved. Are you
a Christ acceptor, or a Christ re
jecter? A Bhort talk on evangelism was
given before the sermon of the even
ing. These short helpful talks will
be given each night. Mrs. Scott sang
a gospel solo, which was helpful to
the service. Tonight the third say
ing on the cross will be treated. All
aro invited.

testified today in Foster's trial.
Reading from the thesis and reso
lutions of the" third world congress
of the communist intemationale held
at Moscow in 1921. Ruthenbers found
a section which the state had not
read when the document was pre
sented in evidence for the prosecu
tion and from this he gave the Jury
the commlnist Internationale's ex
planation that the underground or
the outgrowth of persecution.
Ruthenberg testified Foster had
never been an employe of the na
tional communist party. The trade
union educaUona league of which
Foster Is the head, is an outside or
ganization which the communists en
dorsed and tried to influence, the
witness said.
