The work of drilling at the Trlgonla
oil well, which bad been progressing
slowly with oil indications continuing
good, barring occasional accidents,
was further delayed when the elevator
by which the casing is raised and
lowered, broke in a flaw section from
the great weight overhead. This cas
ing must all be tnken out from the
well, a difficult task, and lowered
again. This will require three or four
days yet, and then drilling will be re

Work of tearing up and grading the
county road between Modford and
TackBonvllle Is underway and traffic
is routed by the longer and steeper
hill road to the south. The scarifier
and large .Holt caterpillar tractor and
grading apparatus is being used. A

Oregon that the largest number of
manuscrlptB, 20, ever to be entered In
the annual Edison Marshall short
story contest, ore now being rend by
Alfred Powers, of the extension divi
sion of the university, the first of a
series of Judges who will decide which
student of tho 26 is to receive tho $30
prize given, each year by the famous
southern Oregon writer. The $30 is
given because that is the amount Edi
son Marshall recolved for his first
story. Tho second prize is $1G and
the third an autographed copy of Mar
shal's latest book.

The trial of Tom M. Word, depart
ment of Justice agent, for alleged vio
lation of the prohibition law, sched
uled lor this morning, In Justice of the
Peace Glenn O. Taylor's court, has
been postponed, for a week or ten
days owing to the pressure of govern
ment business in tho Portland office,
to which he is attached.
District Attorney Rnwles Moore re
ceived a telephone message from
Assistant U. S. District Attorney Mc
Quire, Monday afternoon nuking that
the hearing be postponed untl Wed
nesday, owing to Word and himself
being unable to nrrivo hero in time.
After a conference it was decided to
postpone the trial for a week.
. Word, who investigated the nlght
rlding activities in this vicinity the
past year, was arrested on a warrant
sworn to by Chief of Police Adams
charging him with being "drunk in a
nubile place" on November 22, 1922.
Word, at the time characterized the
move a "frame-up."
