potato farmers of North Dakota had no better luck, worse in fact.
Sir. N. J'. Nelson of Leal, North Dakota, for example, sent a ear
load of potatoes to the Minneapolis Potato Exchange, which was sold
for $:l!i(i. After deducting freight, exchange eliarges, inspection,
freight investigation, shrinkage, heater detention, etc., ete., Mr. Nel
son was presented with a check for $1.30.
Tn oilier words, Mr. Nelson was paid one dollar and thirty cents
for all his work in planting, cultivating, digging, haulilig and sort
ing, after he had paid between ,:i0 and $10 for his sacks alone, and
had also paid for his seed.
To one unfortunate, greater misfortune is not. particularly con
soling, perhaps. Hut nevertheless there is food for thought in the
experience of the North Dakota potato furmcr.
There are periods of acute depression in every business. No
method lias yet. been devised to prevent them. Potatoes will always
he eaten. So will apples, though of course, to a lesser extent. But

The potatoes of North Dakota will come back, so will the apples of
Oregon.' There is probably a disposition now in both districts to cut

our judgment to avoid hasty action and in the meantime to see what
can be done to eliminate a method of distribution which allows a
shrinkage of $3:10 to $.'M from the farm to tho market.

tic speed, I'm keeping up my drillings, I look for further killings,
to gain more ehicki-nfecd, If I should die tomorrow and quit this
course of toil, my aunts, immersed iu sorrow, won't have to beg
or borrow, to make tho kettle boil. 1 have sufficient plunder, I
havo an ample store j ami so I sit and wonder just why in purple
thunder I claw around for more. I'm growing old and wheezy,
white hair is on my crown; I ought to take things easy, and quit,
my strivings cheesey, and watch the sun go down. Thus, when
the week is dying, I gossip with my soul, and in the dusk I'm
sighing, "I'm old, lind I'll quit trying to swell my ampin roll."
Rut 'Monday morning finds me hot-fooling through the grad; no
wise resolve now binds me, the thought of resting grinds me, I
chase another scad. For wealth I am not lusting when I the
plunks pursue; but sloth is too disgusting, nnd one will die of
