I 1923 BY INT'U FCATUBtg SERVICE, 4MC.
1923 BIG YEAR
rt !
In 1923, accorcsng to the February
lssuo of the A .(omobllo Trade' Jour
mil, the 'automotive market can safely
absorb :ten per cent more. motor ve
hicles than w.ero sold lest year, when
2,550,000 cars and trucks were pro
duced. Other conditions rcmnlnlng satis
factory, this promises to be the moHt
KticceBriful year, for both maker and
dealer. 'in the entlro history of the
automobile business.
Approximately 1,650,000 passenger
cars will pass their sixth year of ser
vieo some timo during tho next. 12
months, and under- normal economic
conditions must bo replaced. This
represents, the largest replacement
market which has been available
since thn establishment of tho auto
motive industry. - "
About 800,000 cars will bo required
for what We may term "new owners."
This estimated requirement will, of
course, bo modified hy existing in
dustrial and agricultural conditions.
It is estimated that "5.000 cars will
go into the export trade. Adding
these together, we find a demand for
approximately 2,525,000 passenger
cars.
In tho commercial car field, the
percentago of trucks needed for re
placement is not quite so largo as In
tho passenger, car field. Approxi
mately 125.000 commercial cars will
be renlaeed during thn coniinir 12
months, if business conditions con
tinue on n fairly even keel. A de
mand for 135,000 trucks for new
owners is anticipated. About 15,000
trucks will be sufficient for the ex
port trade. This brings tho total
estimated requirements for " 1 923 to
275,000 commercial cars, making a
otel of 2,800,000 puSHongor .ears.-and
rucks, or an increase of about 1 0 per
cent over last year's production.
Smull Cars Continue- to Predominate
Of tho estimated output of 2,525,
000 passenger ears for 1923, Ford
may be counted upon to turn out at
least 1.150,000. Tho Cicnernl Motors
units .should collectively build about
45(1,000 passenger, cars. A selected
c,roup of other lenders, consisting of
Durnnt, Podp-e. -studebaker, Over
land, Maxwell, (Hudson-Essex uud
Nash, should collectively turn out
"26.000. This would leave a total
production of approximately 190,000
for all other manufacturers of pas
senger cars In business.
It Is expected that of the ears
built in 1923. 34 per cent will-sell for
less than $500, 33 per cent will be
In the J500 to $1000 class, 19" per
cent will bo In the $1000 to $1500, 7
per rent In the $1500 to $2000 class.
3 per cent In tho $2000 to $2500
class, and 4 per cent in the class sell
ing above $2600.
Of the estimated output of 275,000
commercial cars fpr 1923. Ford will
produce about 125,000. General
Motors should turn out about 15,000.
A group of leading truck ' companies,
consisting of Dodge, White, Iteo, In
ternational Harvester,' MncU, Keputi
lic, Packard and 'Autocar, should col
lectively build nbotu "5.000. : This
leaves . a - total production of only
about . 60.000 for, all other truck I
makers. - ''
