ago continues to hold over awaiting
the announcement of his successor by
the president. The aspirants for the
apiwlntment who took the civil service
examination are Nellie Red, P. II.
Myers, and Fred Turner. All the ap
plicants entered the contest highly
recommended by their followers. Mrs.
Reed's twenty-two years service in the
Gold Hill post office speaks well for
her efficiency, while Turner has a
splendid war record over In France
and Myer has got just a good old
record in his homo town.
Judge C. P.. Watson returned Mon
day from a five-day trip to Salem on
legal matters, and while there contin
ued his trip to Portland on a like mat
ter and got caught in the highwater
blockade on his return home. It only
took him 2i hours from Salem on the
train to -Gold Hill journeying home
ward.. .
About 100 guests and members were
in attendance last Saturday evening at
the public joint installation of the local
camps of the Modern Woodmen of
America, and Royal Neighbors of
America at their camp room in the
city hall. After installation lunch was
served by the Royal Neighbors and the
balance of the evening was taken up
with sports and dancing by the young
er members of the guests and mem
bers. A. B. Kellogg and R. K. Adams
were installing officers for the Wood
man, and Lucy Mee and Letsey Miller
for the Royal Neighbors.
J. W. Clark who recently rented the
Kellogg office building on the 'north
side in Gold Hill on his return from

building on the south side. Mrs. Clark
who has been very ill since their re
turn is reported to be much Improved.

The Jackson County Chapter of the
American Red Cross will hold a spe
cial meeting on next Tuesday after
noon January 16th at 2:30 p. m. in the
public library, Medford, for the pur
pose of choosing a board of directors
for the ensuing year.
This should have been done at the
annual meeting in October but on ac
count of the busy season aqd conse
quent small representation from other
points, the election was deferred until
after the holidays. ' .
It is urged that all the outside points
as well as Medford workers make up
delegations and plan to be- present.
The Red Cross is doing most- excel
lent work under the leadership of our
new secretary and we need immedi
ately to fill vacancies on the board of
directors, reorganize the executive
committee and choose officers for the
new year.
The success of the annual roll call
in raising funds tells of the respect
and interest which the county has In
the work of the chapter. Remember
the date.
