and trips through morgues and hospi
tals to view the dead and Injured vic
tims of reckless automobllists are be
coming effective In many parts of the
middle and fur west to curb the Btead
Uy mounting toll of automobile vic
tims, a digest from the report of sev
eraPstates shows. Pines alone, the re
ports Indicate, are not proving effec
tive.: ' In Chicago and Cook county, despite

trips dropped from 76 to 25. -
Cleveland is employing workhouse
sentences and morgue and hospital
visits as well as fines. Six speeders
were sentenced to attend the funeral
of a four year old victim of a Bpeeder.
In Des Moines, Police Chief John
Hammond has ordered intoxicated
drivers held without ball, while judges
are- adding jail sentences in many
cases to heavy fines.
Judge Qeorge E. Mix of St. Louis
who assesses fines as high as $300,
has added a traffic law school to his
court. Speeders who admit they know
the traffic ordinances draw heavy
fines. Those who do not are required
to sit down between two policemen
and study it. When they can recito
the entire law to the judge they got a
lighter fine. '

Wilmot, former federal prohibition
apont, was found trinity yesterday in
the United Slates district court here
on n charge of bribery.
The Wilmot case was credited with
being one of tho most sensational in
the history of prohibition in Califor
nia. An outstanding feature of the
trial was an admission of perjury by
Mrs. Stanley Scott,- a resident of
Frenno, who paid that she became a
party to a spurious ulibi to show that
Wilmot was In Sacramento on July
29 of this yejHVon which date he. was
accused of taking a $100 bribe, from
J. J. Kolburn, n.drugifiHt here, pre
sumably to influence an illegal, liquor
charge against Kolburn.
Wilmot was found guilty on "three
counts, accepting $100 -from a drug
gist, accepting gifts of whiskey and
accepting the use of hn uutumobilo
lit furtherance of a bribery, conspir
acy. Saturday was set as the date for
sentence. Each count curries a max
imum penalty of three years' and
fine of $2000. The . maximum sen
tence therefore can be nine years and
a fine of JC0O0, if the court sees fit
not to have the sentences run concur
