A check artist was again at work
the latter part of last week with a
i. kin Raine. He bought articles at dif
ferent stores in the city and then
cashed checks for about twice what
the articles were worth. The checks
were on the Farmers and Fruitgrowers
bank and among the stores that were
swindled Wore Weeks & Orr and Mor
doff & Woolf. The man, it is alleged,
stated that he was working on a ranch
and presented cheeks on the accounts
of several ranchers forging their signa
tures. '

A flue fire at 712 West Second street
yesterday afternoon was the cause of
the fire alarm and although little dam
age was done the fire chief warns local
people who burn soft wood to see to
it that their chimneys are clean. It
was found yesterday afternoon that
the flue was practically pluggod with
soot which caused the fire.

Medford Monday from lied Bluff, Cat.,
where he was rearrested Saturday.
Sheriff Terrlll states that he had

parole and decamped a short while
ago. Ho is now confined In the county
jail and Is under one year Jail sentence
