ampled distinction for one not a sub
let of Great Britain.

to have rolled up immensely dur

Sir Basil is credited with being or
having been, the largest share-holder
in Vlckers-Maxims, the greatest of
tho European munitions makers. He
is at the head of a French group,
which is associated with the Anglo
Persian Oil company. His holdings
in banks 'and bujiiiress .enterprises
spread all over Europe. Ho Is credit
ed with" controlling newspapers" and
oven .dictating their policies. It is
' even charged (hat ho is a stockholder
in' ono of the leading pro-George
newspapers In Fleet street. .
Sir Basil is said to have supported
tho Greek Treasury during tho Bal
kan wars to tho extent of $200,000 a
month. He has helped to finance the
Venlzolist: cause and is said to have
spont' nearly $20,000,000 in financing
tho Grock invasion of Asia Minor.

Philanthropy flows from the Zah
aroff purse. Numerous, French and
English universities have chairs en
dowed by this little, known figure. He
passes from capital to capitul, giving
generous alms to the poor, and it is
charged, that he also provides the
sinews of war for kings.
