FORD HAS ONLY
STARTED FIGHT
DETROIT. Mich., Cot. 12. (By As
sociated Press). Renewal of the lease
under which the Alabama Power com
pany operates the, government's elec
trical - generating - steam plant at
Muscle Shoals has no bearing what
ever on the offer of Henry Ford to
take over and operate the Muscle
Shoals property, nor has it any bear
Ins on the status of that offer, officials
of the Ford Motor company said today.
Representatives of Mr. Ford reltor
atcd today previous statements credit
ed to the manufacturer that he had
only begun his fight to obtain control
of Muscle ShoalB.
' WASHINGTON, Oct 12. Renewal
for another year of the lease under
iVhlch the Alabama Power company
operates ' the . government electrical
generating steam plant at Muscle
Shoals was announced today by Secre
tary Weeks. '.
The contract was renewed on the
same terms as originally negotiated, a
step which Secretary Weeks said was
necessary to "enable a number of cot
ton mills and other industries in states
''including North and South Carolina to
continue operations which otherwise
would be compelled to close down or
materially curtail production because
of disturbed conditions in coal and
transportation Industries and lack of
developed hydro-electric power.
