Khi'viki, I. W. W.'s, radicals, ct cetera, I" take advantage of the rail
road strike, for n reign of terror, few people look the statement
seriously.
There has been so much talk tihont Bolsheviki, so many cries of
"Wolf," and so little concrete evidence of serious trouble, that. the
.people us a whole, have been inclined'to maintain an attitude of in
difference tow'ard this peril, as toward many others.
But the report from Chicago that three striking, shopmen on the
Michigan Cent nil railroad have confessed to vreeking the Million
Dollar JOxpress, resulting in two dent lis,' and many injuries, can
scarcely fail to awaken the people to the reality of the crisis.
It now appears there was also a plot to wreck the Twentieth Cen
tury Limited near Elkhart Indiana, while arrests in various parts of
the country, shiw a wide-spread conspiracy to enlist strikers in a
red-revolution, looking toward seizure of government property. -y

Of course as far as organized labor i concerned, this lawlessness
undoubtedly represents a decided minority. But it is a very active
minority. It is a minority, which to date, has met with little opposi
tion on the part of the labor rank ami file itself.
, The ti'mo' has come when American' labor, should clean its own
house not only for the good of the country, but for its own good.
Standing on the indefensible principle that a worker who does not
belong to a union, thereby deprives himself of his constitutional
lights and is legitimate prey for professional thugs and brick throw
ing mobs, is the sort of thing which gives these undesirables a work
ing basis for their anarehiar propoganda. f
Respect for the law, obedcinco to the law, on the part of all citi
zens, high,' low, rich or poor on this ground and this grwnd alone
can ultimate disaster in this country be prevented. Makewn excep
tion in one case and the gates are let down for exceptions in all
eases. Only uncompromising and unqualified obedience to law and
order supported by awakened public sentiment, -can solve the prob
lems which threaten American security.

TROUBLE SHOOTER.
MY IylZZIR used to frolic around our native grad as though
it had the eolie or something just as bad. Its wheels would
lfalt and stumble, its cylinders would miss, vits works would groan
and grumble and pop and shriek and hiss. I took Biz to the tin
ner to see what he could do ; he said, ".She'll be a winner, you bet,
when 1 get through. With crowbar and with spanner her
troubles I'll correct; she'll run in queenly manner, thereafter, I
expect." Ho made his best endeavor, he took Liz all apart, and
she was worse than ever, which nearly broke my heart. And in
tho sultry summer when all the skies were blue, I took Liz to the
plumper to sco what ho could do. "When I havo done some
plumbing," ho said, "around this bus, you'll see her up and com
ing till all the speed cops cuss." Tho plumber man was clever,
no doubt he had some skill; but Liz was worse than ever when I
; Jifitl paid the bill. Then, in a sort of panic, I said, "This thing
must cease; I'll seek a true- mechanic, all black with auto grease.
A man who fixes autos, and nothing else beside, whose hat is full
of mottoes, whose skill is trno and tried." llo did some trouble
shooting, as skillful as could be, and Liz and I went scooting
across tho sunlit lea. . .
